I usually have to point if I want something to go with the coffee that day, they never get the order right other than my usual, which they already know me by now. They simply don't understand english, it's aggravating.

Really? Why is the comment degrading, disrespectful, and discouraging? There's nothing wrong with saying that his experiences there aren't the best he's ever had and it's due to the fact that the employees don't speak and don't understand English. I'm actually offended that you had an issue with this. This is the US and English is the official language of this country. I have no problem whatsoever with people speaking other languages in addition to the official language of this country but why is there an expectation that other languages must be understood here? My family immigrated here from Portugal and while they still speak Portuguese to each other, they all learned English. And the children all learned English. Because this isn't Portugal. Same with my spouse's family. They came from Ireland, but all learned English. Because this isn't Ireland either.

Why is it that people whose native language is different (in their home country) think they have something to get offended over because English is the accepted official language here?

Speaking just from personal experience with my local DD, though english may be a second language to most of the employees they are all courteous, professional and have no problem understanding me or speaking so I can understand them. Nor have they ever gotten an order incorrect.
(Plus DD coffee beats that other place that's on every corner hand down!)

It's not about being offended about the idea that immigrants should learn English (and who's really disputing that anyway? Life is difficult if you don't...). It's the reality that if you come over to this country today, it's more difficult to learn English than ever before -- if you're in a community of other immigrants, for example, and there are hundreds of cable channels, Internet sites that don't force you to get immersed in the language, it's not the same as our predecessors who might have come to America even a few generations ago. So giving those new immigrants help by providing some bilingual tools, etc., doesn't seem that crazy in that context.

Meanwhile, I can't help but point out that English is an official language in Ireland. So, I'm guessing your spouse's family wasn't exactly in the same boat as the unlucky individuals whose job it is to work for a fast food chain doling out coffee all day. Yes, it's frustrating to deal with a customer service rep -- in person or over the phone -- whose native language isn't the same as yours. But how about a little sympathy for the poor sods who are stuck in such a job, likely having as hard a time understanding you as you are them and probably worried on some level that they're going to lose said crappy job or get in trouble with the franchiser (for DD, it's often South Asian owners) who might be a relative.

Hmmmm, this is interesting because I can not see at all how you could have gone and taken my post the way you have obviously interpreted it. Either way, I'm not here for a pissing match and I'm not going to explain myself any further. My response was intended for the person who decided that someone else posting about their own experience was a bad thing. It wasn't.

It amazes me that people actually pay for cold coffee. I throw mine out when it gets cold.
