I think this is just local in California...

Has anyone ever taken avantage of their free workout offers? Do they make you listen to a sales pitch and harass you to sign up for special offers if you do so right then and there?

Oh, and is this offer available to men (fathers, brothers, etc.)??

alert mods

Of course you would be subject to a high pressure sales pitch--fitness clubs are the worst for that!

There is no such thing as a 'free' workout...

WARNING: Dangerous for those who take up on this offer.

alert mods

just whatever you do, don't go in there if you already have muscle
and don't ever ever grunt when your lifting. they throw people out for that.

i went for their 14day trial and they wasted my 1 hour before giving me the pass. I used their gym for 2-3 days only...

In retrospect, tell them to give the sales pitch after the trial period and just give u the pass.

LA Fitness has opened a branch in Troy, MI. They are in the verge of opening many branches around MI.

http://www.lafitness.com/Pages/clubhome.aspx?clubid=460

They are offering a great deal (comparing to LifeTime fitness ($160 1 time fee, $60 pm). No 24 Hr Fitness nearby...).

$720 for 3 years (Thats $20 per month) ($100 initiation fee)
$150 - from 4th year onwards (~$10.71 per year) with 14 month renewal if you have membership from another fitness center.

The same deal is available for a family member (wife/sister) without the initiation fee.

This is a statewide membership not out of state.

I saw a special on tv about how they throw you out if you make grunting sounds. That's a shame.Sometimes the umph will get you through that last rep.

alert mods

I'm not a member there, but good for them! To me, it's not so much the grunting that bothers me personally as long as it's involuntary and not really loud, but some people do it constantly and you would think they are giving birth for all the noise they make. This is usually the same type of person that will let the weights drop on the weight stack or floor at completion of a rep instead of controlling the descent. This is dangerous and if they can't control the weights they should use lighter weights or work out at home, since there are other people there, too. But worse than that I think are the ones who just come to the gym to socialize and claim they are resting between sets (for 3-5 minutes). ARGH.

There was a case in NY where one guy got so angry at another member's grunting in his spinning class that he attacked him. Here is the article, which also sheds some light on why people feel the need to grunt. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/28/worked-up-about-workout-grunting/

By the way Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there.
