You'll need to opt in to receive a printable coupon for that big day! For Rewards Cards members only. If you don't have a Starbucks rewards card, here's a great excuse to get one! Go here to find out more about the Starbucks Reward Card.

Huh. interesting about the rewards card. As for the gold card vs. regular... it looks like if you go to their card site and add your mailing address and birth date to your profile (if you already have a card; also eligible if you're a new sign-up), they'll send you a coupon. My only guess is that in this case, it shouldn't matter what kind of card you have. It isn't specified, but I could be wrong.
From the linked page in OP: "...Any drink you like, our treat. Just visit starbucks.com/card to add your mailing address and date of birth to your Rewards Card member profile, and opt in to receive mail from us. We'll send you a coupon to bring into a Starbucks store* on your special day. Happy early birthday!"

I think you're correct..the free drink is only for the GOLD card members. Im not a GOLD card member but I love starbucks. I'd still keep my reloadable card even without the freakin FREE DRINK .. =)
I am not a Gold Card member and have never been. In fact the $5 card I purchased has been expired for over a year now. I still got in for the free birthday drink.
This is what it says when I go under personal info on my account: One of the benefits of registering a Starbucks Card – you get to enjoy a free beverage on your birthday!
