Thanks, I am trying it to get rid of AVG nag screen. I hate that it forces windows update be enabled full time though. I don't fully trust MS after WGA/notify secret sneak-in debacle and forcing updates that can't be uninstalled, but seems to run with no bloat. We'll see.
I have to wonder if the security risks posed by everyone having the same operating system are magnified by everyone having the same security software. But hopefully people who don't have something now will use this, and cut down on the number of zombies out there.
Took a long time to update, but it might be ok.. Only two choices of sending info back to Microworld disturbs me! A little or a lot, what about none? Otherwise I'll give it some time. Thx OP

Same here, have it on several machines. Uses a LOT less memory than anything Symantec/Norton, and has been OVERLY effective (for some reason, it doesn't like KeyGens )

I'm very happy with my free antivirus, but thanks just the same OP - green for you.
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/09/first-look-microso... Although you won't be asked for personal information or to register for anything, you'll need to pass the Windows Genuine Advantage validation to install MSE. In short, while Microsoft's security updates are available for free to pirates, active protection from Redmond isn't.

I tried twice to do this yesterday but the installation would be halted mid-way through - I finally figured out that it was probably my Norton antivirus that was blocking the installation.
I wonder if this is why last week Norton sent me an email offering me a free upgrade to Norton 2010, for the length of time my Norton 2009 purchase was still valid (111 days).
Then I saw a notice on the Microsoft site warning people that if they already have an antivirus or antimalware program on their computer, adding the new Microsoft one probably will cause problems, slowdowns, clashes, etc. --- they advise deleting all others before adding the Microsoft one.
In my case, I'll wait until my Norton subscription expires before deciding whether to switch to the new, free Microsoft one or not.
Got the Norton 2009 one for $10 (after sale, coupon, rebate, etc.) and if that's the case again next year, I might stay with Norton, depending on what the user feedback about the Microsoft one is, at the time I need to make my decision.

NantucketSunrise - You should never have more than one antivirus program running at a time - they will always compete and cause problems.
i am a relative noob when comparing anti virus/internet security software. how does this compare to the kapersky internet security i am running now?? thanks!!

Thank you, some good words from Steve Gibson http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-216.htm. it's slow at the beginning to scan everything, but then scan only what has changed. Regular updates. Light weight, low memory consumption. Slow, but the the word is should pick up bad stuff with less false positives.

I reckon that other Antivirus software like Avast, Antivir or AVG free may be better.

I find MS Security Essentials to bog down the system while scanning a bunch of large zip files.

No just sharing my experiences with MS Security Essentials and my opinion that there are better alternatives.and needed three separate posts to do that?
I installed it last week and it worked great. However, I started getting runtime errors with my IE8. Got so bad I uninstalled MSE and no more runtime errors.
