It's being promoted as a way to use your economic stimulus check. However, you can purchase it without using the stimulus check. You're getting a 9% ($30/$330) discount on the gift card.
If you have a rewards credit card that rebates supermarket purchases, use that to purchase the GC to get an extra 2-5% back.
The program will be available throughout Kroger stores nationwide – including Kroger, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Hilander, Jay C, King Soopers, Owen’s, Pay Less, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC stores. Kroger customers who are interested in exchanging their refunds or economic stimulus checks should present their check and customer loyalty card at their local store’s Customer Service center from May 2, 2008 through July 31, 2008. The program is limited to one offer per household with a limit of $1,200.00.
Customers who do not have a hard copy of their government-issued checks may still take advantage of this offer with cash, a credit card or by presenting a valid personal check to the Customer Service center. Kroger Gift cards do not expire. Bonus amounts cannot be used toward the purchase of alcohol, lottery tickets, pharmaceuticals or tobacco products.
Apparently this deal is available at Kroger, Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Hilander, Jay C, King Soopers, Owen’s, Pay Less, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC stores. It will be interesting to see if other supermarkets offer a similar deal. Sears is doing it too, but they are only offering it to those who receive paper checks. Link to Sears article

Good idea. Too bad I don't have any stores near me that are related to Kroger.

Not that hard to get additional cards if you want.

thanks OP, great find...I especially like the gift card idea...an extra 10% in home depot gift cards with a 10% off coupon equals my flooring at 20% off.

You can use Kroger GC to purchase other gift certificates? Because I know a lot of stores like CVS don't allow this
Also at ShopRite..Need to use the check and they give Cash Back for the remainder, must be done in $300 increments, 10% extra is added to the card.

I click on Kroger and cant find store near me, zip 94401. But, when i search Yahoo local search, foods company listed website as www.kroger.com. Can I do this at foods company?

Kroger cash registers do not have this limitation, but occasionally you run across a curious cashier. Just try another day, or another store, with another cashier. And purchase a 2 liter of coke or some candy bars to not stand out so much.

I just tried two local Kroger stores and neither would allow this. Worked fine last week, though.

The cashier didn't allow it or the register blocked it?
