While at our Northern California Costco warehouse this evening I saw a refrigerated (not frozen) display for USDA Prime Rib Steaks. Sealed 16-18 pound bags were $7.19 per pound, while 3 steak flats were $8.99 per pound. Usually these marble rich steaks run closer to $20 or $30 per pound.
does costco only sells USDA Prime steaks? I always buy my prime ribs at Costco. Sometimes I see them selling for $4.99 to $6.99 a pound. But I never check what grade is the beef... I'm in WA btw.
I realize this is the normal price for Costco, but 8.99 a pound for USDA Prime beef is a steal. I also noticed they had Prime NY Strips also. My local grocery store charges more than this for their lousy choice steaks.
I did buy the ribeyes about 3 weeks ago and they were excellent. Now if they would only dry age them!
Frankly IMO Costcos filet mignons are the best choice typically at only $10.99/lb. Used to always go with the ribeye's at $8.99, did the upgrade and never looked back. The taste/texture of the filet mignons is a noticable step up from the ribeyes, plus 95% of the filet mignon is edible (not pure fat or grisel) making it at least as cheap, oz for edible oz, as the ribeye. Of course then the dog doesn't get as many leftovers...
