Sadly many Japanese camera manufacturers are having their cameras made in China.
Personally I have found made in Japan electronics in general to be of a higher quality than similar items made in China.
Thankfully a few like Canon and Panasonic are still actually manufacturing some models in Japan.
Has anyone else actually found this in a store at this price?
lower end electronics are made in China, higher end in Japan it's been like that for a long time. lower end bicycles made in China, higher end in Taiwan, been like that for long time. mass produced Toyota Corolla and Camry in USA are made in USA, higher end Lexus luxury cars are made in Japan. cheap camera lenses made everywhere, but you know you want a nice Canon or Nikon lenses they're made in Japan.

Not sure how this post got a red. Unless China makes better quality product than Japan?

I found one of these cameras at a NJ WalMart and showed the receipt you had for $110 but it refused to match, claiming Louisiana and NJ are different markets and they wouldn't match a Louisiana price. They also suggested they only would price match competitors, not themselves (which I found odd). I might try another WalMart or see if a competitor will price match the WalMart price. Any thought/ideas to convince WalMart to honor the price?

Actually, alot of Japanese, US, European, and Taiwan companies have moved "simple" manufacturing to China. Thus, "Made in China" labels have improved since their joining the WTO (used to fall apart in 3 days). But the every one of these companies do save the best tech for themselves. So I would expect a Made in Japan or Made in Germany product to be a superior product than Made In China.

Quick followup - I went back to the same WalMart and there was a different salesperson and different manager. The salesperson went to bat for me (noting the camera was no longer a current model) and they honored the $110 price. YMMV. Thanks OP.

and it doesn't matter at all. some sd780s are made in japan and some are made in china. if the label wasn't there you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. so just drop it. its a stupid old argument.
Sometimes people choose to purchase items based upon a like or dislike of the country. There is nothing wrong with that. China is a brutal and repressive regime. Japan kills Whales.
Pick your poison.
Too bad the US doesn't manufacture items like they once did. Our products used to be the best.
I am going to check my local WalMart because this is a pretty decent price for this camera. Thanks OP.

I think that's a load of bs. I have had made in Japan products break down on me as much as made in China products. I say, THANKFULLY so many manufacturers are making stuff in China. Otherwise, you'd think we have such quick advancement in technology and such low costs? We probably still be using 2.0MP cameras and paying 5 times the money if it wasn't for China.

March 21, 2010 Also, cameras from Sony and Olympus are made in China. I've owned Chinese models from both of these manufacturers and frankly I'm not impressed. Old Olympus cameras made in Japan were finely crafted instruments that took really great pictures. My old Sony (made in Japan) was great. But the new stuff from China is served up in vacuum bubble packs that hang on the racks at the marketing superstores and the quality just isn't there.
It's hard to figure out where cameras are made from the reviews. Some companies make new models in Japan and then move production of older cheaper models to China. So even if you know the model you can't be sure of the country of origin. You pretty much have to go into a store and look. Check the bottom of the camera and it may say. Otherwise, ask the store clerk to get you the box and read the fine print. it's always there. Most manufacturers have some models made in Japan and some in China. The difference in quality is noticeable.
