I got one of these at Big 5 (which you posted) for $199 ~6 months ago, just fired it recently and I love it. It's bare bones finish-wise but feels and works good.

Ideal firearm for home defense at a great price

The urban people have finally become used to gun deals being posted on here, they no longer freak out at every deal. I hope it's education vs. acclamation but it's a good thing either way. And good deal OP, might be able to be used for Turkey hunting too.

Well I dont think it would do very well for turkey, I dont think it has a rem choke...but if you have a Zombie problem thats a different matter!!

Nice how they tack on a $5.55 "no cash discount" to the final price. So it's actually $190.55 shipped. In 4 1

been looking for one of these to keep @ the house...i'm fairly anti when it comes to guns (no flames please ), but now that I have a daughter, it'd make me feel better to have one of these just in case. I wouldn't even keep live ammunition for it...i think just the cocking sound would deter almost anybody. Is this a good price? Should I just try a local pawn shop for an old used one instead? Anybody have any insight to help?

Thanks!

1. Get this, don't buy used guns from pawn shops unless you know exactly what to look for.
2. Take an NRA class on shooting so you understand your firearm. Imagine buying a dangerous power tool and not learning how to use it properly. Not a good idea.
3. If you don't plan to load the gun, buy something else, something you are more comfortable with, high end pepper spray, tazer, whatever. It's not worth $185 to have the shotgun racking sound, I'd much rather have something I could actually defend myself with if I wasn't going to learn to use my shotgun and buy ammo for it.

A couple of things to take in to mind... This gun has an 18" barrel compared to most shotguns in the 28"-30" area. (Yes full length guns can be cut down but this is much more compact already} This will be much easier to hide under the bed or in the closet close by.

I don’t know how old the daughter is, but please use a trigger lock that can be removed by the adults quickly but keeps curious kids safe.

If there is a wife or girlfriend in the house, educate her on what to say and do alone late at night, so you don’t catch some shot when stumbling in after a night out...

Education,Research and more Education.....don't just buy a gun - find one that suits you! You are going to hear "that's too small" or "that won't stop anybody" over and over again. Test fire guns at a local shooting range to see what fits you the best. Yes, 12 gauge shotguns stop intruders, but are you still going to be holding it after the first shot - what if you need to fire again? After you find what you need/want practice, practice, practice!

Previous two posts have excellent information.

While I have several pistols and shotguns easily available from a safe, I also have 2 young daughters. So I keep a can of wasp and hornet spray next to the bed. It makes an excellent KID Safe home defense tool. A NEW can has a range of 20 + feet and requires a trip to the emergency room for an antidote to stop the pain and loss of sight!

It’s unexpected, easy to train the wife & kids to use, and IF the perpetrator makes it out of the house, the police can pick them up at the local ER!

I plan on picking one up for my Home Zombie Defense Plan.

Thanks op!

Some people say there are a lot of good used shotguns in pawnshops.
Wouldn't a 20 gauge be a better choice for home defense in case your wife has to shoot it?

Not sure that's a good idea. wasp spray - snopes

thanks for the wisdom guys/gals...it's something i've been mulling over for a long time, but as pointed out...I need to research/educate myself before and maybe wasp spray/pepper spray is the better way to go for now until i'm more comfortable..

Don't rely on the wasp spray. I've sprayed myself a few times (long story involving chasing carpenter bees under the eaves of my house), not full blast right in the face, but a good amount about equal to what you could reasonably expect to be able to hit someone with. Not something that I enjoyed at the time, but it's surely not disabling in much of any way other than it smells terrible and burns your eyes some. It definitely does not require a trip to the emergency room. The active ingredients in most sprays are basically harmless to humans as far as any near-term effects. It's the petroleum-based carriers that do anything at all. It might surprise somebody and buy you a few seconds but don't count on more than that and they're just going to be more pissed off versus incapacitated after. Also in the dark in a stress situation you probably have a 50:50 chance of having the can turned the wrong way and spraying yourself. lol Something caustic like oven cleaner, strong bleach solution, etc., in a good trigger sprayer that can only work one way would be much worse/better depending on which end of the spray you were on.

I've also been sprayed with mace and tear gas a few times in my misspent idiot youth. There's no comparison. Much, much, much worse.

Can anyone comment on the quality of this shotgun compared to the Pardner 12 gauge that Turner's Outdoorsman has on sale for $190 here?

Wow, $199 is a good price since it'll cost more than that by buying at Buds if you're in California and after factoring tax and ffl fees.

Would people please stop spreading this stupid WASP spray myth! Everybody who says it works sounds like an uninformed idiot. This is a MYTH that keeps circulating around the internet and it's going to get someone hurt!To say WASP spray is as or more effective than pepper spray is liking saying a paintball gun is more effective than a shotgun. It's just not true. Pepper Spray is trusted and relied upon by law enforcement agencies worldwide! To date, no human testing has been conducted on WASP spray and it’s a violation of federal law to use in self defense. There are many home defense pepper spray options which will deploy up to 25 feet and unlike WASP sprays, these pepper sprays do not require the user to be as accurate because their spray pattern will cover an entire doorway.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet and STICK WITH THE PEPPER SPRAY!

It is the exact same gun, except the 982 has ghost ring sights; some same this is a good thing, (The GRS) and others say it is bad, I really don't think it sways me one way or the other.

Bad idea. If you pull a gun on someone, they might feel more threatened and now be more inclined to use theirs on you. Most people will tell you the cocking sound thing only works in the movies. Let's say you cock it and they keep coming. Now what? Will you switch to a baseball bat, or just swing the gun?

Regardless, consider the scenario of the L.A. riots or Katrina. People who had guns were safer, (until the cops illegally took them away (Katrina)). Even if you don't want a gun within easy access for home intrusion type things, think about if something big happens like riots or Katrina or worse, and you had time to prepare. Let's say you can see hoodlums coming from a mile away brandishing guns and shooting people or whatever. Now, ask yourself which you'd prefer: no gun, an empty gun that you can cock for sound effects, or a gun and ammo you normally keep tucked away in a gun safe. It may take you five full minutes to get it out and load it, but at least you have it.

That's what I recommend to people, anyway. If they don't want guns within easy reach, still consider having them locked away collecting dust. Having it and not needing it is better than not having it and needing it. If zombies attack, you'll wish you had one tucked away somewhere, and you'll probably start wishing you had practiced with it more, too.

Oh yeah, and if you want your daughter to be safer around guns, teach her how to hold and unload one. Don't even have to fire it. Get some dummy rounds to practice with. And if your guns skills are lacking, maybe take a safety class together. When I was a kid, I didn't have much curiosity about guns that would get me into trouble. Why? Because all I had to do to shoot them was ask my dad's permission first.

Pawn shops can be great, assuming you are decent at checking for wear or trust the shop. One shop near me is run by a good guy who I think pretty much has the gun section just for fun since he sells them so cheap, and it's pretty much "if there's a problem, bring it back." But if you're not sure, and are looking at $200 shotguns, the amount you could save probably isn't worth the bother.

And I'd say 20g is fine most of the time. I don't necessarily always recommend a shotgun for home defense, (but it's probably in the top 2 or 3), but a 20g is more manageable than a 12 and still hits like a truck.

What kind of shell should I buy for home defense with this gun?

Thanks, OwassoOkie

You'll get varying opinions on this. Many of them will be some preference of something like #00, #4, #1 buckshot, with the occasional birdshot "for the first round." The problem with even using birdshot as the first round is you are assuming you will have time for a second round. Remember what birdshot is used for -- birds. Consider how much stopping power birdshot would have against, say, a deer. If someone is charging at you with a knife or gun or something, how happy are you knowing your next (only?) shot is birdshot? Any round that penetrates enough is enough to go through a wall or three, (or more), so while "something that goes deep into attackers but not through walls" would be ideal, you have to lean your thoughts more towards "...not go through Too Many walls."

Just tossing some general opinion stuff at you for consideration, and you can go from there. imo, a big thing to consider is the birdshot. If you fear for you life enough to aim a friggen shotgun at someone, there are limited reasons why you would want to pull the trigger using something that could even be stopped by heavy clothing. ymmv. Let the discussion commence. If you want the quick and simple answer: #00 buckshot.

Regardless, stay away from Hollywood stuff like shooting rock salt. Rock salt can work well on ghosts and demons, but that's about it.

I have one of those in my closet. It's built like a tank and goes bang everytime I pull the trigger. It's a great bargain at less than $200.

You've got which? The Pardner or the Interstate? If they're pretty much the same gun, I would be tempted to get the local deal at Turner's. It'd be nice to see one with ghost sights before I bought though.

They are indeed pretty much the same gun. Perhaps even exactly the same, according to some people who sell both. Minus the ghost sights. I've read plenty of good things about both. I'd certainly take one over a newer 870 Express.
