The main difference between the 2 deals is that the...

- Costco WD My Passport comes with a soft carrying case + WD Smartware Software (does easy back ups) *note, some hate this since it is hard to get rid of, but for those who just want to use this as a backup hard drive, it's really great.

- and Dell WD Elements is a basic portable hard drive for those who just want some random portable storage without any "bloatware"

Both of these products have great reviews (don't count the negative reviews for the WD My Passport since 99% of those are complaining about the included software which they knew they were getting, those people should have bought the WD elements)

Think these are some of the best deals currently for these types of hard drives since you can choose either a basic hard drive that is cheaper some a little more for some software + soft carrying case. No need to deal with the hassles of buying coupons of eBay or rebates with either of the deals.

these hard drives will work on a PC (and also a mac after some formatting, ask a friend if you don't know how, not too hard, but you will lose the software from the My Passport if using a mac)

Are you sure if was a portable HD? Do you have an old link? That price seems more like a regular 1TB hard drive.

I find it hard to believe that they would sell a 1TB PORTABLE HD for that price.

Portable Hard Drives do not need a separate power supply beyond the USB cable.

In looking at it, while external it is not portable.
It has an ac power supply..

@ yesidonoitall - then it's a different product (it's like comparing a desktop to a laptop, both get a similar job done but but one is a lot bigger than the other), the size of the portable hard drive is about 2-3 floppy discs put together

Costco probably now has this drive at a new low price which beats out other deals currently out there for this type of HD with no hassle of coupon/rebate. The Dell Elements however a great deal for what you are getting. don't think i have seen a 1TB for much lower (especially without and eBay coupons/rebates)

Just a heads up that the Costco drive does not have a standard 2.5 SATA drive inside. If you think you will be purchasing it to open up and replace your internal laptop drive you will be sadly mistaken.
