Parallels lets you run Windows on top of Mac, retails for $80 but you can buy an older version with a rebate and become eligible for a free upgrade to the newest version.

- Find and buy Parallels 5 for Mac on Amazon for $39.99

- Fill out the $20 rebate form from the developer (the rebate code comes with Parallels 5)

- Save your Amazon receipt, then register and activate Parallels at https://www.parallels.com/account/

- When Parallels 6 is released (September 14), go back to https://www.parallels.com/account/ to access your free upgrade to Parallels 6

Maybe I am too paranoid, but how to make sure that Amazon is an authorized reseller for Parallel and will fulfill their following condition:

Customers who bought a retail box or download version of Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac or Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac Edition from an authorized reseller starting August 15th 2010 need to proactively claim their upgrade directly with Parallels by using the claim form which will come available upon release of the new version of Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac on this website. This is the only way to request a free upgrade under the Tech Guarantee Program for Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac.

This will work... I did the exact same things for the last two versions, both purchased from Amazon, and it worked flawlessly. The rebate check arrived quickly, too.

Parallels 5 was a huge improvement over version 4 in terms of speed... I'm skeptical Parallels 6 will be THAT much faster, but they do claim the boot time for Windows is almost cut in half, so that alone might be worth $20.

Thanks. Just ordered!

Does anyone have the actual rebate form from the package? How many rebates can a person/company do?

Just got a MacBook- what is the real benefit of this program? I understand it allows windows to run on top of Mac osx but I'm looking for some real life examples.. I was planning on just using bootcamp to dual boot and it's free..but if this has some incredible benefit that I'm not seeing I'd consider it..

This is how I plan to use this: My company doesn't support Macs. I usually use my Macbook at home for personal use. There are some times I quickly have to check something at work. Instead of shutting down and booting into Windows via boot camp, I would just start XP from Parallels and VPN into work from there. The VDI image for Parallels has been imported from a work image that was created for these purposes.

Same here. I used the same upgrade process for around $20 net to upgrade from Ver 4 to Ver 5. Also, Parallels 6 is stable and I have been using the beta version the past two months without a glitch. I am running Windows 7 64-bit under it.

Could I use the same copy of win7 to dual boot and run parallels on the same machine or would this be considered 2 installs?

FYI, Amaz0n raised the price to $49.99 making the final cost $29.99 after rebate.

Here's some more info about Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Tech Guarantee for upgrading to version 6.

On the question of whether or not Amaz0n is an authorized reseller, here's a excerpt from their Parallels 6 Press Release describing its availability & pricing.

Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac will be available for download, as well as packaged software for delivery, from Parallels.com starting on Sept. 14. Packaged software will also be available at Apple retail stores and App1e.com, Amaz0n.com, Fry’s Electronics, MicroCenter and hundreds of other retail locations nationwide on Sept. 14.

Got my Parallels 6 Activation Key in couple of days after I submitted the online form.

Vmware Fusion 3 is a $10 upgrade if you own any version of parallels or previous version of VMware.

I had copy of Parallels 5 (got it free with OS X Snow Leopard from zones), which I used to get the VMware upgrade.

Version 5.0 is now $59.95 with a note about a free upgrade so I guess this deal is DOA.

I followed the steps in the first post and never received the Parallels 6 Activation Key. I logged into my account and it has my Parallels 5 Activation Key that I entered, but I don't see anything for Parallels 6. Is the Parallels 6 Activation Key supposed to be emailed to me or is it stored in my account some where?

It's back. Actually a couple bucks cheaper now: $37.99 with the same $20 rebate and free upgrade to version 6.

I sent in my request for a Parallels 6 key using my Parallels 5 key. I had an email 10 seconds later with a trial key to use in the meantime (it said 6-8 days before my full Parallels 6 key would be sent); however, 1 minute later I got an email from someone at Parallels with my new Parallels 6 permanent key. Rock on!

It's true what AphexII said.
Sent mine 10:30pm last night, got an e-mail right away with Parallels 6 trial activation key.
Then around 4am I got another e-mail with the upgrade key for Parallels 6
Cheers!

It was a little unclear to me how to request the upgrade, so since I finally found out and if anybody else would like to know...this is where you can request your 6.0 upgrade key:
