DO NOT CALL LOCAL STORES TO CHECK INVENTORY! Employees have been known to tell you they have none and set aside the good deals for themselves!
Call Staples catalog at 800-333-3330 or 800-3-STAPLE. The CSRs can tell you what inventory shows for your local store(s) - without alerting the local store's staff about the deal. (Hit 3, and then if you hear another recording hit 2 - sometimes 3 gets you a rep right away, other times you must hit 2 in addition).
Just replace the "<SKU>" with the SKU of the item. Don't link it (FW->Staples link are not working) it has to be copy/pasted in to the address bar. Many users have trouble with these links, so please read below... If it does not work the First time, and you fet the Staples home page, It will work the 2nd time.
Stock Check Instructions:
These instructions should allow you to use the check stock links throughout FW, and in this thread in particular.
Staples Coupon Policy Staples retail stores accept mailed or circular/newspaper coupons from other competing office supply and electronics retailers. Known retailers are: Office Depot, OfficeMax, Circuit City, Best Buy, Microcenter and Fry's among others.
Acceptance is by manager discretion according to how "local" the competitor store is (another state may not be accepted), but according to corporate the policy is firm. If you have a valid coupon from a competitor for an item they stock, it should be accepted under their price match policy. If you encounter a clerk who doesn't know of the policy, take the issue to the manager, and if even she/he doesn't know (happens) feel free to note his/her name and the store number (usually at the top of a receipt). Then call the Staples "Office Of The President" toll free number. Ask them if the policy is in effect nationwide, and when they say yes (current as of this post), give them that name and number, and inform them of what occurred and the names of those involved. Say you'd still like to use it now, and they may keep you on the line while they reprimand them, and tell you to go back in and make your purchase.
I personally spoke with the "Office of The President" and she told me that local Staples stores are NOT supposed to accept any competitor's coupon that are printed from the internet. She further stated that only newspaper/ magazine/ snail mail competitor's coupons would be honored.

I have a store that was showing low inventory stock for 2 of the flash drive color types and wanted to find out whether the 1-800 national customer service people could confirm that these were new items or returned/damages items. The CSR said that she wasn't finding anything in stores anywhere in the country. I don't think she knew how to check inventory. She also asked if I was getting my information from Fatwallet, which was funny. Staples seems to be on to us.
I decided to go to the store and they claimed that they sold the last of the flash drives last week, which suggests that maybe the price dropped to $2.50 last week, but was not reported until this week???

I saw that but from my limited experience, when a clearance item rings up, it rings up at the clearance price and not the "original price minus a clearance adjustment".
Is there a factor I'm missing, or does this involve some haggling in the store?
