also Amazon has the current version, same as Android Store. Some would rather spend more at Android store with google checkout since Amazon is slow sometimes to update apps.

I tried to use it on Sprint 3G and the remote party complained about echo (they were able to hear their own voice). This app does provide different gain settings and all. I tried most of them but for some reason they still had echo problem.
Also when I used this app for the 1st time, it sent Gtalk invite to all the people on my contact list with email address (somewhere around ~500 contacts) and then for next 4 days my inbox was full with "Delivery Failure" auto reply from all the invalid email address.

Warning: this WILL spam many people on your contact list with an invite! They should have made that optional
For Incoming calls you need to log out from any Google talk client running in any form (PC,Mobile, inside gmail, etc). Since this app uses Gtalk to make and receive calls. So if you are logged in to your Gtalk account on your PC and this app is also running then you won't receive any calls. You need to log out from your PC 1st and then only it will work for incoming calls.
I have been using Csipsimple+IPKALL+Sip2Sip+Google Callback ( But that's also most of the times hit or miss since Sprint's 3G speed in my area has become terrible)
Not sure about the echo, I don't get any on my phone. But if you look at the change log for the current version it looks like they fixed the spam email problem.

Maybe I'm wrong. Judging by some responses. I am wrong. I was thinking Google Voice Calls by landline. Doh!

I am able to get on Wifi in China and call the US for free with this app. The quality is horrible, but that is because my internet connection in China is also horrible. This should work from anywhere in the World to call the US and Canada for free. Calling UK would be a different story. I forward google voice to one suite to receive calls in China for $.022 per minute, plus a monthly fee.
I am on Sprint (using a Motorola XPRT) and software works well on Wifi but did not work on 3G (calls go through but both sides cannot hear each other).

I bought mine thru AppBrain for $3.99. Benefit: Automatic upgrades. This is awesome. I've been using it. There is a delay, and occasional distortion. Overall can't beat, free calls to Canada, and no minute usage. I am very happy. Of course it's not 100 percent reliable. But I have my Virgin minutes in case of need. I found out thru FatWallet. Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem with my Pandigital tablet. After multiple emails back and forth with the developer, he didn't respond anymore. I never got it working.

I have a similar problem. Sometimes the app displays "calling" but there is no ringing on either end of the call. It continues to display "calling" endlessly. I requested tech advice, but no response. This is not as reliable as I had hoped.

Trying to find a Goggle SMS app (like I have on my iPhone) that allows you to both GET AND SEND SMS for free. Have never paid for a text msg on my iPhone and just switched to a Samsung Infuse and can't find a way to SEND SMS for free using my GV number (I can receive thru GV but not send).

The google voice app lets you send and receive sms for free. Since you have an android phone now, all google products are integrated smoothly.

ok,
i thought gvoice did not work from overseas, on inside the USA ?
how would i get groove ip onto the phone if i had no mobile plan and couldn't buy it at the app store, to convert a wifi phone with no service plan
which phone to do is cheap and reliable with a web logon interface ? blackberry?
--- Take your number with you when traveling with GrooVe IP! If you are traveling overseas, now you no longer have to be without a cell phone, or aquire a local cell phone in the country you are visiting. You can use your GrooVe IP phone to make and receive calls as long as you have a Wi-Fi connection.
If you have a smart phone with Wi-Fi connectivity but no mobile plan, you can use this app to convert it to a free, full-featured working phone.

Google Voice USED to be a godsend......until they started cycling random incoming and outgoing routing numbers......
I WAS using only 60 minutes a month on my 250 minute plan until this occurred and then I got hit with $60 in overage fees due to the fact that Google changed from using a Fave Five number to a different number on each and every phone call.
If they have changed back to maintaining just a single number please verify.
Also, if you are being blocked from GV because you are out of country then go to proxylist.co they block and mimic IPs from various countries and you can get a US IP so you are not blocked. Also helpful with YouTube and Hulu.

How do I disable this app? I exit out of it but whenever I want to make a call, it automatically pops up asking me if I want to use it or the mobile network.

Went to buy the app and discovered it is now $4.99!
For those without an Android phone who want unlimited calling and SMS, I set the following up:
1. Sprint SERO (Touch Pro 2) 2. WM Wifi Router to tether to laptop 3. Obihai connected to tethered laptop 4. Bridged the wireless adapter and wired Obihai
I can make calls using any phone I wish now with this setup. Connect a bluetooth enabled phone to the obihai, and suddenly all your old bluetooth phones have become usable again! Unlimited calling for $30 plus tax/reg fees. Two phone lines via google voice. It isn't $1.99 or $3.99 on an android phone, but it definitely works.
Be advised, call quality using VOIP over a cellular data connection may not be on par with what you're used to. In my area, Verizon has decent 3G coverage, but the network is saturated since everyone's jumping on the smartphone bandwagon. I tried using GrooveIP, but had to stop due to frequent audio cut outs. If you're on AT&T though you probably won't notice a difference. xD

my experience has been that the echo is dependant upon your network connection and also the quality of the phones hardware.
Groove IP worked much better on my Samsung Captivate than it currently does on my Motorola Triumph.
also, there are settings to kill the Echo, boost the mic volume and some other things (in the setting menu of GrooveIP).
$1.99 yet again for those who missed it the last time.

Does anyone have experience using GVoice+OBI & GrooveIP at the same time? They both seem to use the Gchat/Talk plug-in. Does one override the other, or can I use them both?
In other words, when people call me I want both the phone plugged into the OBI & my cell w/ GrooveIP to both ring. thanks

There is an "easy" way to sanitize most programs. After you've bought Groove IP, extract the apk off of your phone from the /data/app folder. Then find a program called apk manager 4.9 by googling it. Place the apk in the folder named "place-apk-here-for-modding". Run Script.bat. Select option 22. Select the correct apk (in this case com.gvoip.apk). Select option 9 to decompile it. Go into the Projects folder and search for "flurry.com" or whatever else you would like to change. In this case, you'll find it in the file projectscom.gvoip-2.apksmalicomflurryandroidy.smali. Change all of the "flurry.com" entries to "127.0.0.1" using notepad. Back at the command window, select option 11 to compile the modded apk, and then 12 to sign it. Go back to the "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder and take the newly created signedcom.gvoip.apk and place it on your phone. Uninstall groove IP and install your modded version. No more contacting flurry. You can use this same method to change almost anything.
Be careful doing that. All android applications are signed with certificate of a publisher, after unpacking and modifying content of apk you will sign it with your certificate instead of the original publisher, so you become software thief. Modifying just hosts as somebody suggested much safer than breaking copyrights.

As far as the actual google voice app, this is my understanding. If you have google voice on you cell phone, outgoing calls use data and you are not charged for any minutes. However, if you receive calls, then you are actually using your minutes. The way around this: if you have the fav five plan (verizon has something similar) (where you can make or receive unlimited calls to your favorite five people), you would add your google voice number to your fav plan. THEN, you would have to turn off the caller ID on your google voice and have it set where when someone calls your google voice #, your incoming caller ID would just display your google voice number telling you that someone is calling you from your google voice. By doing this, you are only using your data minutes; if you don't turn off caller ID, then you will be charged minutes.
