Those are the Mavericks, and H&D in my observations always run a sale on those at some point or another, too.

Don't do it. I got suckered in again this year, because they used to be so good. However since changing owners and then going bankrupt, the pears are no better than store bought.

I have to say that I am quite disappointed with this year's batch too. First off, each of the two boxes only had 6 pears in it, and none of them were as large, beautiful, or as delicious as year's past. This will be my last year ordering them.

That's lame! The pictures above show 9 pears in each box!

(I sent this as a gift this year, so I'm disappointed I didn't get my money's worth)

You should complain, since the description on their site says, "2 boxes, each containing 7-12 Royal Riviera Pears."

yep, mine from last deal arrived last week, it got 7 pears in it.

Thank you for letting us know! I was really lamenting that I didn't pull the trigger on the deal for $20 with free shipping. Now I feel much better, like I didn't miss out on anything.

here's what i got from the last deal for $22.05 shipped and they were delicious!

$22.05 shipped

They should be sold by weight. $1.50/lb is typical around here, nice to have them shipped to the house and don't forget you can delay delivery.

$22.05 shipped

That's exactly what my shipment looked like.

I had 11 in each box, but they were probably a bit smaller than the ones pictured....very tasty though, I was pleased.

Thanks for the picture! I sent these as a gift with the same deal and it was reported they were packed well and looked great upon arrival with instructions on how to ripen a few at a time. It is nice to see what they looked like since I was not there to see them.

These are also called COMICE Pears. You can buy them at any fruit store and at many supermarkets. For a LOT less money.

It's really about the giftability factor, not necessarily the pear itself. having it well-packed in a closed box with the "Harry & David" logo makes for a much more pleasant gift than a plastic bag of fruit you hand to your relatives. Now, unless you hate your relatives...... or you're just a real cheapskates who like to show up to christmas party wearing your FW BF T-shirt you proudly got......

So... the deal is about getting the "gift" pear for a cheaper price than otherwise, it's not about pear...

of course, it's all about the pears

Grandma loves these and for $30 shipped for 10/lbs I'm in.

Picked up a box for myself last time around when they were something like $20 for a 5/lb box. I don't know where you guys live but I can't get any pear like these at my local super, or specialty markets in San Diego. Regular pears are usually $2-$3/lb and these are so damn creamy and tasty I far prefer them over the other ones that while tasting like pears are almost always "grainy".

I'd never pay full price but at this price point why not. These pears are damn good, even this years as someone mentioned they weren't very good.

Thx Op!

BTW - I go through Chase Ultimate Rewards as they offer 10 points per $1 spent at H&D so it's actually like an additional 10% off. $27 (after 10% in points) for 10/lbs of insanely juicy, tasty, and creamy pears IMO is well worth it.

Comice pears, buy them from Sams Club. They are the same thing

We got a box as a gift and they were awesome. My kids still remember them from last year.

I have a question - is the price going to show on the packing slip when it's sent as a gift?

For those of you that don't like your H&D pears, I'll take 'em off your hands. For free.

I also got the deal from last week, 2 boxes of 7 each. I let them sit for a week and they were perfectly ripe and very juicy.

I've been buying Royal Riviera the past few years and got in on the last 2-box deal a couple weeks ago. Sent to my parents and they were very happy, each box contained 9 big pears. I got to have some over the holidays and are as tasty and juicy as I remember them. Was definitely a good deal for ~$20, but not sure if I'd pay close to $30 for them.

I can't speak to the recent acquisition, but I can talk about the quality of the pears. I ordered two boxes before Xmas on the last FW deal that came up, and they were a HUGE HIT. My holiday houseguests all raved that they were the best, sweatest pears they'd ever tasted. Even my kids (ages 3 & 6) were lining up to eat them. They like fruit, but usually need some coaxing to eat it as a snack. Not with these pears. My daughter actually remarked "this is better than ice cream", a quote I'll remember for a long time.

One of my boxes had 9 normal sized pears, and the other 7 large pears. Both boxes were the same size. I think they packed in as many as they could given the relative sizes of the pears and I definitely feel that I got my moneys worth.

We finished off the last batch yesterday, and I'm ordering another couple boxes this go-around. Obviously Green for the poster.

One other thing, last year after the holidays H&D had a similar but cheaper priced deal on blemished pears. Pears that were perfectly good except that the skin was discolored or had minor blemishes that precluded their use in a gift box. Since we were ordering for ourselves we didn't care about the cosmetics and the cost savings was substantial. I'm hoping they do something similar again this year.

I bought two boxes at the $22.95 or whatever. Although admittedly, they aren't as appealing (no pun intended) in aesthetics compared to the couple of times I've ordered in the past, after I allowed for two days for them to ripen, they are just as delicious and juicy as I remembered.

these are hit and miss even from the same box. I had 2 the other day, one was OK, kinda "gritty", not that juicy at all, and the other one with some red in the skin was very creamy, juicy, not much grits until you get to the center of the pear.

just ate a couple of them last night from the $22 for 2 boxes deal we received in the mail last week (USPS of all things). While I can't say whether this is the same as Comice pears from Sam's (will definitely try that and compare), what I can say is that it is easily the creme de la creme of pears I ever tasted. The texture is perfect and the sweetness is not the typical grocery pears for sure. It's definitely a deal for $22 on the 2 boxes but that's as high as I'm willing to go, definitely not buying it for $30 for sure.
