I doubt if I will find a deal like the one I got last year.
H&R Block At-Home Deluxe 2010 (Digital Download) $0.01

Still $20 to e-file state taxes

I am surprised no one has used this Free one good for federal AND state

"To file your federal and state taxes for free with MyFreeTaxes, you'll need:

Earned income of less than $57,000 in 2011
A valid email address
A valid Social Security Number (or ITIN - Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)"

Most people have more than $57,000 of earned income...

According to Wikipedia, the median household income in the US in 2009 was just under $50,000. According to US census, in 2009 it was $50221. Therefore, (unfortunately) most people do qualify for free filing.

EDIT: added US census data from 2009.

I discovered last year when efiling that TurboTax does not charge for efiling New York returns "Efile fees do not apply to New York state returns." Is this true with other companies as well? Is it some sort of state law? I was wondering why it was not asking for my credit card number when doing the efile!

Details are in the fine print on the bottom of this page.

Is no-one else bummed about the $20 State efiling fee? How does efiling cost them any money, especially when you've already paid them for the software itself. States and IRS accepts efiling for free (because it saves them the hassle of manually processing paper returns), so why do these tax software companies charge for efile?

brahmachari99 said:   ... so why do these tax software companies charge for efile?Because they can. And some people are willing to pay.

You have at least 3 choices:
1. Pay to e-file (cost = ~$20).
2. Print and mail (cost = printer ink, paper, and postage).
3. E-file for free on your state's website, if offered (cost = time to re-input figures).

Here's today's price breakdown for TurboTax (Federal, efile included, state extra)via the B of A website clickthrough:

Deluxe $19.45
Premier $32.45
Home & Business $48.70
Business $97.46

Note: These are available to anyone.

Anyone else received this free offer from H&R Block?

Last year I received one of those, and used it for 3 or 4 returns. So I don't expect to get another one this year.

I was surprised to receive today (via snail mail) the same deal from TurboTax--TT Basic including five federal e-files! Yes, this is the full version (of Basic), not a "try it and pay for it if you use it." I'm sure they'll encourage me to upgrade (at a cost) to the higher-level products, and want to sell me the state version too. But PA state taxes are so easy that I usually file via telephone, so it's not worth any kind of software.

So it looks like another free year of tax software for me.

Does State qualify for 33%? It seems like when I looked, I could get Deluxe for 33% off, but not State.

I've never paid to e-file with TaxAct. I don't have state income tax in WA state, but I don't pay for federal e-file with TaxAct. I use the deluxe version because I like importing my previous years data. This year I ordered a few months ago and got it for $9.95.

I have been using TurboTax forever but each year it seems to get dumber (I think they want to push the higher priced versions), and the import from Quicken becomes worse.

Any idea if TaxAct / TaxCut / H&R allow imports from Quicken?

For FY 2011, the estimated median family income was $64,200, according to the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

However, I would think most FW users (as in those who would view this thread and benefit from this tax filing option) would have household incomes exceeding $57,000...

Can you provide a link or the $15 off? I only see a $5off sale price...

$15 OD GC offer

Note that the $15 GC and $10 MIR offers are not combinable ... both require original UPC.

From the H&R Block At Home (previously called TaxCut) packaging: "Imports data from H&R Block At home, TurboTax, and Quicken".

This applies to the Basic, Deluxe and Premium versions.

This is really helpful- ty!

"For FY 2011, the estimated median family income was $64,200"

The maximum is for earned income which is one component (usually the major component) of family income. Earned income is basically the amount you see on your W-2 form.

Yep, it's state law. Starting this year, NY banned paid preparers from charging an additional fee to e-file. TurboTax counts as a paid preparer, so no efiling fee for NY state returns.

Just got a free copy (usps) for HR Tax at Home with free filing.

Finally a NYS law that is useful (as opposed to stupid ones like the one not allowing drug stores to give gift cards or other promotions for filling prescriptions).

What about the direct download from TurboTax?

$49.95 for Premier (investment property)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/login/choose-product.jsp

Where is it cheaper? Any hidden gotchas?

That price doesn't include state.

Will the $10 rebate stack with the $15 gift card rebate at Office Depot for HR Block Deluxe+State? This would bring the cost down to $15+tax.

Never mind. Answered above. Thanks.

Might want to keep an eye on local Office Max prices next week (1/8)...

Same for click-through from Fidelity (25% off):

It's an additional $27.70 for each state. E-file included, which might make these options worth your while. Personally, I'll print at work and pay for a stamp.

Last Feb 26,2011 got a H&R Block 2010 Deluxe-Fed+State+e-file both for 5 individual uses for $10.00 on a HotDealAlerts. Hope I get the same this year and will post on this forum if I do.

Hi all,

Last year my Dad got a ltr from IRS telling him that they made an error on entering his "EFiled" Federal return and they owed him $250!! He got a check from them 2 weeks later, with no explaination as to what the error was!

2 weeks later he got another letter saying that they made an "error" on his tax return and he now OWED them $250.00!

He called and was told that when the person was typing in his tax return into the system (WHAT -- it was EFiled & they TYPED it in anyway??), they made a mistake in typing! Yes that is correct, that was what he was told!!

So do you really have your return go into the IRS electronically and then retyped manually?? Who the H--l knows at this point!!

Anyway, It is a mandate of the IRS that they only allow 5 Federal return to be Efiled, but does that mean per computer or what?? Does anyone know THAT answer??

From this

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1145584/m16463617/#m16...

I was still able to get the TaxAct for $11.90 this afternoon.(Even the landing page said $17.xx)

After I sign up, TaxAct send me an email contains the following.

"For TaxAct Online Ultimate Bundle, your fee is: $11.90 and includes your Federal and State return."

H&R Block At Home Deluxe 2011 for Windows (Download) dropped to $16.99 at Amazon. Great deal if you don't need this software to file your state return and don't care if you have a disc or not. NJ has it's own website for free state filing and it's easy enough to punch in my info there.

On the Amazon product page, the chart for the Deluxe version states: "1 state program download included". Is that correct? Then why even have a "federal + state" version?

Federal only. It would say Federal & State on the box if it included both.
