Looks like you need to spend $800 or more:
"When the cost of your room plus the purchases made at any MGM Resorts location that are charged to your room during your stay total $800 or more, you will receive a $100 statement credit. "
I already have a reservation for 3 nights this summer in a nice room (Queen Bungalo I think?), a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night stay, and I booked for just under $500 with taxes (but not resort fee). $800 would be a pretty nice room, or a stay of 6 days or so...

Agree with @mcornwell, unless you are either a) a 'baller or b) not taking advantage of the plethora of promotions available all the time, you'd be hard pressed to spend $800 on a room in Vegas, even AFTER meals.

It depends on the hotel. Aria and Bellagio are $800, but that amount goes down as you scrub that slider across. Luxor, for example, is spend $300, and get 10% off your room and $40.

Since you would charging to your room anyway (per the AMEX terms), it would be great to stack this offer with a resort credit offer like this Bellagio $100 resort credit from the hotel.

Maybe it is just me. I always found MGM hotels overpriced. I can always find rooms in other strip hotels of similar quality for a 10-40% lower rate. I like the Harrahs brand because they don't charge non-sense resort fees.

I wonder if I can charge the Cirque du Soleil tickets to my room. Then if I go with friends and go to a show, with $150 a ticket, 4 people is already $600. 2 night stays with 2 rooms at $50 each then there you go
Doing this would give you an amazing dinner for FREE, plus $100 towards the $800 you need to spend for the AMEX credit and % off your room at Bellagio.
Regardless of which MGM resort you stay, you should be able to charge meal(s) from other MGM resorts to your room.

Rates are higher than most promos found online. I did a comparison and 4 nights at the Luxor through AMEX was $405, same dates through the latest promo link from smartervegas.com has it for $324 and that room only gets $40 back
Same days at Mandalay, $930 through AMEX, $744 through web promo

I don't think you have to book through AMEX's site. You just have to register your card and book a room (other sites, especially directly with the resort, should be okay) during the specified dates. Because you'll be charging everything to your room, the charge should show up as one lump amount on your AMEX statement for whichever resort you stay.

if you don't need to go through their link, it's free money. I signed my card up, but can't confirm either way.

This one seems a little confusing. We are looking at staying 5 nights at Vdara in May, so we will be well over the $600 or $800 threshold anyway. I found a 15% off code at smartervegas.com code VRSIG11GV that can be used right on the hotels website and cost less than clicking through the AMEX booking link ( it's also less than the 20% off sale on Hotels.com) I'm not sure if you get the AMEX discount as a credit later in addition to the $70 credit?

What is the harm in registering with AMEX, booking directly with the hotel, paying with your AMEX, and seeing what happens?

No harm at all.
That's actually what i did being that the reservation is 100% refundable up to 48 hours before check in.
Registered the card and got confirmation from AMEX saying i was registered for the promo When you book online via the hotel site it only takes a deposit which was equal to the first night rate. No additional discount was reflected yet, but it almost sounds like it will come after the fact?
If all i get is a $70 credit once the stay is over it's still a good deal for me since it was something i was planning to do anyway

Yes, the AMEX part is a credit that you'll (hopefully) receive after. It's not instant. If it was, people could abuse the system and cancel their reservation.

There is no such thing as a cheap trip to Las Vegas. Plus the experience you'll have trying to stick to a budget is about as generic as they come.

how does the 15% off work? Do you get that when you checkout at the end of your stay or is that a statement credit as well?
the reason i ask is because if the hotel gives you the AMEX 15% off they might not stack the 15% off you get when you book the rooms using the code.
If they don't then it'll be a better deal if you book with their site promotion of $100 dining credit then receiving an additional 15% off when they charge you for the room.

The fine print on the promo says the 15% off is given "at point of sale". So it sounds like it means if you click through the AMEX link those are the 15% off prices. I didn't book those as it ended up being cheaper using a different 15% off code, so go fiqure. the code i used was also about $200 total cheaper than the code with "20% off and $100 dining credit", so you really need to be vigilant.
I am doing a 5 nigh stay, so I am seriously considering registering my other AMEX and making 2 seperate reservations, one for 3 days the other for 2 each on a seperate card. This should easily give me $600 in spending on each card ( which is the promo threshold for the Vdara). this would give me $140 total in statement credits for this stay ($70 per card).

Thanks, that makes sense. I can't seem to find the link to book through the AMEX promotion. I wanna compare the two rates on the weekend i'm going. It keeps telling me to register, but i've already done that. Know how i can get to that link?

you know what, I can't find it either. I know right after i regeistered my card it took me to a page that said i was registered and gave a "book now" link. I clicked it and checked prices, which were a little high, so i just closed it. It's strange that the confirmation email doesn't have a booking link in it either.
Maybe we will get 15% off afterwards? That would be awesome, but it's unclear since the terms say discount is at point of sale, but then again, is the point of sale when you actually pay for the room (checkout)? When you book online at the hotel website, you only pay a deposit which is usually equal to your first night.
here are the T&C's I found:
To be eligible for this offer, you must be the named recipient of this invitation and register any eligible American Express Card below between 9/26/11 and 9/26/12. You may register more than one Card for this offer, but only those Cards you register individually will be eligible to earn the statement credit. Room discount applied at point of sale. Using your registered Card, you must book and pay for your stay at your selected resort. When the cost of your room plus the purchases made at any MGM Resorts location that are charged to your room during your stay total $600 or more, you will receive a $70 statement credit. Blackout dates may apply. An "Eligible Card" is a valid American Express Card issued in the U.S. by American Express, Bank of America, Department Stores National Bank and First National Bank of Omaha; however, certain Cards are not deemed Eligible Cards, including prepaid cards (including, without limitation, American Express Gift Cards and Serve cards) and corporate cards. If your Card is replaced during the promotional period, please call the customer service number on the back of your Card for assistance. Statement credits are generally issued within 5 business days after your qualifying purchase, but may take up to 2 billing cycles to post to your account. Additional terms apply; see Registration Terms below for details. Cannot be combined with any other offers

I just signed up for the Aria offer to compare rates, and using the "book now" link still gives regular room rates. Since there's no discount, I'm guessing the 15% off is applied at the end of your stay when they charge you for everything. So, it's very likely they may give you another 15% off on top of the 15% we saved initially.
In your case you can save a ton if you use two cards to split up your 5 day stay. I'm guessing the only hassle is having to checkout and check back in, but then again, it's probably worth it.

The 15% is not applied at the end of your stay. You have to book through the AMEX link to get the 15% discount.
I don't have the links for the other promos, but I did confirm that the rates from those links are 15% less than the links going directly through the MGM website - at least for the rooms I was looking at.

that makes this deal a lot less attractive. I can find 20% off deals pretty regularly
