Unlike the last JVC deal posted a few days ago for the same price, this one has HD radio built in instead of being HD ready. Seems like a good deal. Clicky

Anyone know much about this? Hubby's got a 66 Cutlass, and he's always complaining that the (under-dash mount) stereo and the speakers suck. Wondering if this would be a decent upgrade....

So why aren't HD radios more popular? I haven't seen one bookshelf unit that supports HD, and no manufacturer-installed car radios that do. Do the automakers have deals with the satellite providers that prevent them from doing so?

probably, if someone buys X car with satellite radio you get X back from the satellite radio provider? Probably works like that.
good deal op

I can't believe this. Just the other day it was $90 and in stock all around me. Now it drops to $60 and OOS all around... Guess I should have kept a closer eye on it...
/edit/ Thanks yugpatel!! I wish I could give you more than 1 green!

This looks like a JVC KD-HDR40 packaged with speakers.

If anyone in Central Florida got one and wants to get rid of it, lmk!
Daytona Beach Sears in the Volusia Mall has 5 in stock per inventory report.
I own KD-HDW10 in my 1982 MB 240D with the factory MB speakers and it sounds ok. I did not notice any difference between FM stations and HD stations, may be the speakers are too old or myself.

Placed two orders for store pickup in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul suburbs, and both orders were canceled because the "final" inventory check revealed that the item was out of stock. And for what it's worth, one of the best benefits to HD radio (in my view) is the HD-only channels, which in some cases have fewer or no ads.

My order was canceled as well due to a "final" inventory check so dumb!

Interestingly enough, I used my local zip (Winter Park) and expanded to 300mi with none in stock (so I think the stock checker doesn't "really" work up to 300mi... it shows "We checked the 10 closest stores to your location for availability."). I tried an Osteen zip and viola, something showed up in Daytona. Placed an order since I go over that way nearly every weekend.

Wondering if this would be a decent upgrade.... If your husband is an audiophile, this would be a decent upgrade over a stock stereo system. For the price it's a great buy. If you want to run your speakers cleanly at a high volume you never want to run the speakers from the head unit. To get the best quality sound and minimal distortion you want to purchase an amplifier to run the speakers from. The head unit should only be used to control the settings of the audio not as an amp. Hopefully this will help you make an informed decision.

Do the automakers have deals with the satellite providers that prevent them from doing so? when Sirius and XM were battling out for market share, they made deals with auto manufacturers to have their system pre-installed on cars... whether that forbids auto manufacturers from installing HD radio, I'm not sure... I think the biggest problem with HD radio is that it really isn't giving you that many new stations, it just gives you them in better sound quality

Not in stock for me.
You might be able to get this similar model if you don't care about HD Radio.

Pretty sure I got those speakers from Crutchfield not too long ago. I bought 2 sets and have only installed a pair in the rear. They are really good for talk radio, but the bass is a bit lacking. Of course, it could be because I'm using my factory head unit w/o amplifier, but... Not quite satisfied yet.

Mpls/St.Paul area have many substations in HD, so it depends on where you are located. You are right that there is better sound quality, meaning digital with no static. HD radio is all I listen to. Funny that there are only a few portable options for this.

The one i got from Sears at Dallas has 1 pair circular and the other oval pair speaker in the box. They all have the same rating and are 2 way speakers.
There was a delay to bring me my box, ended with $5 coupon for future purchase too

itsme13 said: There was a delay to bring me my box, ended with $5 coupon for future purchase too The last time i was at Sears to pick up, there was a 3-4minutes delay, whick i'm totally fine with. Anyway, the guy handling my item apologized and gave me 3 of those $5 coupon. I like Sears' commitment to fast pickup service, but after reading the fine print, there were so many restrictions: no online use, no combining coupons, no electrics, etc, those coupons were useless to me. It was more like an incentive to buy more in-store at Sears than an apology from them.
