I got a similar deal with last year's model. Let me tell you, it's worth every single penny. That machine flies yet stays reasonably cool. There are 2 upgrades that will make this laptop even better:

* Upgrade to the 7200 rpm drive: the extra cost is minimal for a very noticeable performance increase -- specially if you do a lot of gaming or development or image processing.
* upgrade to the matte version of the screen: the sotck brigt, glary screens are annoying as hell and unusable anywhere near a window. The matte version is crisp, color-realistic and very easy on the eyes. Well worth the upgrade.

This will take it to about $1000 (after discount). But you'll have an amazing machine in your hands.

I actually purchased this same laptop/same specs before this was posted, but I didn't choose the 1080p and only got the default 15.6" High Definition HP LED Brightview (1366x768). Do you think this is a huge mistake? Will I notice a significant difference in quality.

I didn't like the reviews on the finger print reader & it's above the price point I'm looking for in LT. But I've had my HP destop for 8 years now & other than a power supply, it's been great.

IMO it is a big mistake. On a 15" screen, 1366x768 is much too low of a resolution. You can fit much more on the screen with 1920x1080 (40% more). Then there's the whole glossy vs. matte difference. The 1080p screen is anti-glare matte and the brightview is glossy. My preference is matte but that is a personal decision.

If you do more mobile gaming than anything on the machine it may not be a horrible mistake. You'll get more longevity out of the GPU with the lower resolution. You can always connect it to a larger, higher resolution screen for productivity tasks while at home.

I think you are right here. I'm not as computer savy, and realized after doing further research after the purchase that the default screen is too low for resolution. At least I can use the 21 day return policy if it comes in not looking good/a hotter deal comes along as this seems to be a good deal, but not super hot.?

Do you like REALLY tiny print or games running at 15fps? than go 1080p on that graphics card, otherwise your fine.

I like this system as well as the Dell but the 5400 RPM HD really kills this system, so not as hot.

I would of preferred a blu-ray drive in my system but after having a SSD, this wouldn't of sufficed.

Unlike the Dell one though which was not really customizable. You can change it 7200 RPM hard drive for $13 ($20 and 35% off) more here.

Only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger here is trying to figure out how good the build quality is on this system.

Any comments on the $50 video card upgrade (compared to Op's specs)

1GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, VGA]

vs.

2GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7690M GDDR5 Discrete Graphics(TM) [HDMI, VGA]

so pay 20$ for the upgrade hdd..

or do what I would do..

buy a 120$ ssd plop that in there..
get a 20$ case for the original hd

and use it for a backup drive.

any comments on build quality for someone that owns this model

My friend has this model, it is nowhere near as solid as my Dell XPS, but the parts are good, just the chassis is hollow metal.

The fingerprint reader sucks for windows login. I have to go to manual login, then fail, then the fingerprint scanner turns on. It works great for everything else. The driver just doesn't seem to turn on until after there is a login attempt.

i bought one and returned it, the build quality is pretty bad, nowhere close to a macbook

its also VERY VERY heavy, mine came with smudges on the screen, it did not look new....i ended up ordering an envy 15 instead, hopefully that is better.

It's 5.78 lbs....I don't know that I'd call that "VERY VERY heavy".

The Envy 15 is 5.79 lbs.

Neither is a lightweight, but there are much heavier laptops out there.

And let's not start a flame war comparing a PC laptop at this pricepoint to a Macbook. There's pros and cons to each.

I'm sitting in front of a studio XPS that I've abused for years, so I can tell you that the Dell holds up pretty well. I've literally dropped this thing like 10 times & it's still running like the day I got it.

Strange. I have zero problems with fingerprint logons with mine.

While it's true that print is very small on the 1080p screen, gaming on the ATI Radeon 67xx is excellent. I run many games (DDO/Torchlight/TF2/Trine) on high settings @ 30+ fps no problem. Sure, it might not run Crysis1/2 on high settings very well, but then again, other than a pimped out gaming rig, what does?

This extra stuff reminds me of heated seats, steering wheels, mirror, blue tooth, & video screens etc etc on new cars these days. I just want to get from point A to B comfortably & reliably and if I so choose.. FAST. I like HP. But I'll wait for a better deal on a more basic system.

If you qualify for EPP pricing, the current 35% coupon SPRINGSALENB will stack on the EPP pricing on this laptop, saving you about another $75. The coupon at the top of this thread did not work with EPP.

I had already ordered but they credited me back $50. I guess I could have canceled and re-ordered to save all $75 but I didn't want to delay another week.
