Hell of a good deal. Might get one to have a spare for my mother to use, because I've no doubt she'll kill it within a year. Most likely by rolling over on it in bed.

this is the first time I have seen an essentially reduced price for a Kindle. Lets hope there will be a deal on the Kindle Fire version before Mother's day !

WalMart had a similar deal on the Kindle fire a couple months ago. IT was regular price but included a $50 gift card.
I might have to get a few of these. My daughter's power button has stopped working. To turn on now she has to hold down the button that gets the offer details (and turns on her wireless). Kind of a pain but I don't really want to mail it in for warranty repair without a backup.

Amazon's warranty process doesn't work that way. They send you a replacement. Then you send back the old one using a pre-paid shipping label they give you. I had to warranty my Kindle 2 twice and was never without a device.

Does WalMart usually give this kind of gift card at time of purchase or is it a mail-in style reward?
It's in the April 29th flyer, and the sales cycles are Sunday to Saturday. Therefore, it appears to start April 29th.
They will provide the gift card at time of purchase.

tiablo said: wait for the fire to get down to something like $120.Yes, but only if you want a fire. More is not always better; paying $49 bucks for a device that's lighter, has no backlight, and has better battery life is more attractive as a dedicated reader than paying a lot more for the sake of "more". But yeah, people can decide.

Might jump on this even though I don't need it.
My mom got the kindle fire for Christmas. IMO, it's the worst of both worlds. Poor screen for reading, and definitely not meant to be a tablet. It's also heavy.

What are some reasons to pay the premium for a kindle? as opposed to something like this? http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1164224/ I want to buy everyone in my family E-Readers, but don't know whether to jump on this deal, or buy the cheapest E-Paper device out there... ideas?
I used to own a Sony PRS-350, 5inches very useful touchscreen. Got a Kindle-3 3G now, because I like the idea of international 3G (have yet to travel with it though). I don't think the reading experience is very different, but I definitely prefer the small size of the Sony.

And there are many cons to that aluratek libre:
24 hr battery vs 1 month 5" screen vs 6" 7 ounces vs <6 no wifi no free lending library
Again, if the kindle were $79, maybe you'd want to sacrifice a few features for that aluratek, but when compared to this deal, it makes no sense IMO.

Can you hook this kindle up to a computer to download books as well?

Yes. That's where most of my books come from. There's a program called Calibre that's particularly helpful in those regards.

When they made a similar offer for the Kindle Fire, the gift card was put right in the bag. I used it 5 minutes later to check out with my groceries. In this case, I plan to buy 2 or 3 and will use one to buy the other, etc.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but WM ads are regional. So this deal may not be everywhere. Or perhaps the price will fluctuate in different regions. I hope this $79 price is everywhere, but I all but guarantee it won't be.

The $30gc might be a bit more ymmv, but I'm willing to bet it will be national.

I'd just like to say that I finally got an e-reader when the k79 launched last october. I really like it. When I travel, I leave magazines, papers, and books behind. I load my work onto the device as well. I use calibre (google is your friend) to have local papers delivered wirelessly. It's a great companion. I also have a Fire and love that even more -- except when I'm sitting in my pool. The k79 is much better in summer sun.
This is a no brainer. For $50, everyone should have one of these.

The $79 price is standard, it's not higher elsewhere.

I got in on the Target deal in December where I got the Wi-Fi touch for $99 with $20 in Target GC's. I love my Kindle, and I'm considering getting this deal for a Christmas present (I'm already halfway done w/my shopping!).
I'm just wondering if I should buy this now, or if prices will continue to drop? I missed out on the refurb Nook deal at BB for $40, and I normally don't spend this much on the intended recipient.

I bought the ectaco jetbook which is similar to the Aluratek Libre E-Reader over 2+ years ago, the screen was small and it always get stuck and I have to use a pin to reset it every time. Got tired of it and got the 2nd generation kindle (White one with keyboard), after that got the Kindle touch (excellent battery life)and eventually upgraded to Kindle Fire (multi-purpose - reading and watching videos).

haven't seen this yet. so let me get it out of the way..
No HDMI kills it.
Other than that, nice to see the deal
Kindle must have MAP/MRP (Minimum advertised price/Minimum retail price) hence the gift card deal. Some manufacturers are even worse not allowing coupons/freebees or any type of discount.
Amazon currently has 2 versions of this Kindle. One of them is $79, but "Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers display on Kindle when you're not reading."
Does anyone know if this is the same version?

Great deal! I have one and it is better as an e-reader than the kindle touch or fire (just check Amazon reviews). Clicking to change pages is easier and more natural on this model. The ads are not a bother at all.

the ads arent on the screen when you are reading.. so the ads dont bother most people... worth it to subsidize the price my wife has the fire, my son has this kindle.. of course, my wife can do more with the fire, and use it more like a tablet... especially when you realize you can sideload android apps that arent specifically supported...
but the standard kindle isnt backlit, so its much easier to read in bright conditions.. the fire is more like the ipad when it comes to really sunny conditions... extremely difficult, if not impossible, to read

[Took me a while to chime in, but...]
Thanks OP! Was there after midnight on the first night of the sale and snagged one no problem, it's a great addition to the Kindle App on my tablet as it's awesome in the sun and even more portable than a tablet.
The ads don't bother me at all, well worth the $30 discount. And if anyone cares enough they can have the ads removed at any time for $30, and hopefully that figure will diminish with time (used to be $40 I think) or they'll have a "sale" on the ad removal fee.
