also, pretty sure this one does text to speech... and the fire still doesnt..
not a huge deal to most.. but a deal breaker to alot of people.. who want to have the device turn the ebooks into audio books.

I'm just wondering if I should buy this now, or if prices will continue to drop? I missed out on the refurb Nook deal at BB for $40, and I normally don't spend this much on the intended recipient.
I know it's a good deal but why would you buy an electronics item with a one year warranty and then let it sit for 8 months? You're going to give a gift with 4 months of a warranty left and then explain to the person why they can't get it serviced when it breaks in 6 months. Not something I would do.

Short answer: I don't like the deadbeat recipient, but I'm obligated to buy him something, and this was suggested by his wife.

Long answer: I rarely pay attention to warranties, b/c in most cases, they aren't worth the paper they are written on. Amazon may actually be different, but I won't open the box, so it won't be registered until the recipient gets the unit. I don't see how that would be any different than it sitting on a store shelf for 8 months before being purchased. Also, if the recipient handles this gift like all the others given to him over the years, he'll likely never open or use it anyhow. His goal in life is to create a permanent ass-print on the sofa cushion in the basement of his mother in law's house, where he's been a permanent mooch his entire life. There's only so many tv's, dvd players, etc one can use, and I've already bought those as gifts. We even had to handle the installation for him, or else they'd be sitting in their original boxes too. When his wife suggested this gift option last year, I resisted the urge to point out that permanently unemployed losers could just walk to the local library and borrow books from there!

I find that reading the kindle app on my samsung galaxy tab is strenuous at best. just by the plain fact these devices shoot light beam into your eyes make you tire much easily when just doing plain reading on a boring book, that's even after i set the background to black. while you're watching movies or playing games or doing actual typing work on such devices, your distraction outweigh the tireness factor so you can tolerate it. but just as a plain thing to read on is just awful, possibly because you are so accustomed to reading on a paper that doesnt agitate your eyes. naturally if you grew up reading on an active lighted tablet, that may not be a problem.

Hunny, I doubt the guy you described would read a book or even the warranty for the kindle FTM. Maybe there is something to being less ambitious. People will buy you stuff.

The kindle app & the kindle are 2 diff. things.

I think the poster might be commenting on the frequent question about tablets/Kindle fire vs 'real' kindles.

I honestly don't know, he just sits around all day and does nothing. I hate wasting $$ on this person, but I make it a challenge, to find something that looks like I spent a lot, but I didn't. I've gotten stuff for $20 or less before! Maybe that's the theme, buy it now, and when his birthday comes, tell him it's for both his birthday and X-mas...

this kindle doesn't have the keyboard....I used mine in the Riviera Maya to email back home. Doesn't this have the same feature?

hmm pretty good deal how does it compare to the DX?

Anyone have any good recommendations on what free Kindle games work on these non-keyboard Kindles?

Is there a limit on these? I'm looking to get 7, but only if I can get the GC for each one. If need be, I'll wait in line 7 times, but, if i csn, I'd prefer to bang it all out in one transaction that includes me getting 7 GCs.

This is a good deaal! My grand-daughter loves to read I need to get her one! Thanks.

For one, it isn't abandoned by Amazon. I considered a DX (owned one in the past) and ended up getting a 3g Kindle Touch.

Too bad Amazon has seemingly stopped supporting the DX. It's pretty amazing, if not too big...gets heavy when reading. The Touch (and this deal) weigh so much less and are a joy to use.

If you don't need a massive screen, I highly recommend any of the newer Kindles. My wife sole my K3 Keyboard so I got the Touch. I like them both.

Use the rest for the subsequent purchases of the other units.

LOL...just noticed that the ad shows the "cover" of an e-book on the Kindle with the work "fire" prominately placed. I wonder if this was done on purpose to make some people think this was the Kindle Fire for $79, or it is was just an coinscience. Somehow, I'm leaning towards former.

...or because catching fire is the second book in the best selling Hunger Games series and will be the next movie made, with the Current Hunger Games movie currently grossing over $300million hanging at number 3 after 5 weeks on the list.

Does anyone know if this can be used as GPS? thanks...

anyone knows when will it start? Midnight tonight? or Friday morning?

By the way: I've easily saved $400 by using the special offers, and on things I would've purchased anyway. I traded in my non-special offers kindle so I could get one that has them, though now they let you go in and activate the offers on any kindle if you want. I definitely wouldn't worry about the ads. You never see them when reading.

Anyone know what time the ad starts at the 24 hour walmarts?

Guess after researching this I'm going to be in for one tomorrow. Showing in my local Wal Mart flyer for tomorrow.

not a huge deal to most.. but a deal breaker to alot of people.. who want to have the device turn the ebooks into audio books.

Amazon and all reviews says no speaker built in so no text to speech. Just repeating from reviews, no first hand knowledge until tomorrow.

According to this customer review, which was on the product page, there is no text to speech for this device:
"6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks - These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options."

just buy one now and return/rebuy tomorrow

Will WalMart start selling at 12 am?

Yes, just got back with Kindle and a gift gard.

Did you notice if there was a limit? Our paper did not come with the ad, looking online it doesn't seem to have a limit. trying to decide if I drag my husband so I can get two of them in a few hours...

My one local store had all 47 units purchased by one person shortly after midnight. There were no rainchecks. I HOPE they learned something from that fiasco, but WalMart isn't exactly known for making good customer service decisions...

I'm curious what makes you ask if an entry level book reader can be used as a GPS?

Just got one! The guy at WalMart knew nothing of the promotion nor did the WalMart system. But he was very helpful and was able to include the gift card as advertised. They only had a few Kindles in stock.

Just scored one too. Thanks OP. Same situation as Cwrkr who just posted earlier. I went into WalMart, workers there had no idea of the sale and I had to prove it to them by getting a flyer which I they did not even put out yet so had to wait on the customer service line just to get one! When I finally got the flyer, I was told they literally had just ONE in stock and I was the first customer!! My advice, get it fast and soon!

Btw, flyer also states that you can get $30 card on the regular Nook ($99) and Nook Color ($169) too.

Just got one in Germantown, MD. They had plenty in stock.

Got one in Saginaw, MI. Plenty in stock. The guy in electronics didn't know about the promo, but he looked at the flyer and gave me the card without issue.

Just picked one up in Fulton, NY... They have over 20 of them. Got the GC without a hitch. Thanks OP!

So people can locate you when you fall into an open manhole while you're reading...

Just got back from the Murphy Canyon store in San Diego and they had plenty there.

this would be the "ad" version but honestly they are not intrusive at all.

geek3point0 said:   this would be the "ad" version but honestly they are not intrusive at all.
I have owned both and will only purchase the ad version. The special offers have saved me hundreds of dollars and filled my Kindle Touch with tons of free/.99 books that otherwise would not be free/cheap with a regular "non-ads" kindle.

I simply don't understand the hatred people seem to have for the ads. They are very beneficial and absolutely not visible when reading. I see Kindles for sale locally, and the sellers actually think a title like "Kindle Touch - NO AD version - premium product!" works. I quickly ignore these posts.

...although I do believe you can now convert a non-ad Kindle to an ad one. Never had to though so I don't know if it's for real.

Bremerton store only had 1 of the $79 models (and I bought it). The employee didn't know about the deal and had no gift cards (but eventually was able to find one). I can' believe they didn't have more (they appeared to have only 1-2 of each of the Kindles/Nooks that they carry).
