Got one in Goldsboro, NC (Spence Ave store). As of 3pm they still had at least 6 left. There was no sale signing or mention of a gift card on the display and none of the 3 associates working in electronics knew anything about it - surprised them all when the register prompted for a free $30 card.

I was lucky, the WalMart in my area had a lot of them and so I picked up four (I bought each separately and for three of those I was able to use the gift cards from the one purchased just before and so for those my actual cost was $49).

The Fair Lakes store in Northern Virginia didn't have any in stock. As with huntergatherer, they didn't have any come in prior to the promotion. Lame.
I tried to price-match at the Target next door, but PM'ing a GC deal is against their policy. Didn't try the other one nearby. Thought about PM'ing at the Best Buy across the street, but didn't know what I'd do with a GC for BB.

Just picked one up in north Florida. They still had 5 left after my purchase. They knew exactly what I was referring to, and said you could purchase two in a single purchase and still get both gift cards.

Picked one up for the sister... thanks! Any recommendations for a good case (with and without a light)?

went this morning - my store had 30 of them. but none of the employees knew of the sale or gift card.. once they found out they all said "this is a great deal." I had to wait 30 minutes for them to unlock the security room and get the stock out.

Went to buy one and checked the local classifieds on the way over. Ended up getting a mint Kindle Keyboard w/3g (my 2nd one) for $75. I just think this model (the deal), while a good deal, is too basic.
I'd suggest you check your classifieds for gently used Kindles. Even at $49, this model is way basic, IMO.

Tuff Love cases are very sturdy . I got one for my Kindle Keyboard that can stand by itself w/o holding the reader in my hand. They can be found at Amazon.

I have two Kindles and they both use the OEM cases from Amazon. I like how they clip in very sturdy yet stay out of the way (vs corner straps). The option for the built in lights are nice too as they work well enough and store away well when not in use. However, these cases are generally much more expensive than the third party options.

Not to derail this deal thread (hey, I started it though) but why on earth did you hate the keyboard? I hated the touch because of several reasons:
1. Phantom page changes every now and again (with no touching at all) 2. If I went to brush a spec of dust off in a "bottom-up" motion, *bam* it's on to the next chapter. I then swipe swipe swipe trying to get back to where I was (while spoiling the end of the chapter I'm on). 3. The screen, although the same Pearl in all modern ereaders, looked overly grey to me compared to the KB's screen. 4. Inability to put the touch in a waterproof sleeve (for the beach). Can't turn pages since there are no buttons (Nook Touch got this right). 5. No web access via 3g (minor gripe as it's only used every now and again). 6. Bezel is distracting (too light). I much prefer the charcoal as it hides when reading.
Basically, the Touch was neat, but in my mind, a big step in the wrong direction as compared to the keyboard.

Newer isn't always better (video review) Well to be completely honest, I traded to the Nook Simple Touch, which I absolutely love. I didn't want to say that though, because I didn't want anyone to think I was threadcrapping. I only commented because I assumed you just didn't like the touch feature, but looking at your list of gripes, I actually agree with you. However, none of those issues affect the Nook. As far as web access, I use WiFi and tether the Nook to my EVO 4G phone when I'm away from home.
I hated the keyboard because it made the device top-heavy and after a while it gets hard to hold. And after using other touch devices (Android, iPad, etc.), it just feels right. I am still able to sideload Kindle books onto the Nook (removing DRM with Calibre). I do miss the cover with the book light powered by the Kindle, though. That was slick.

Limit of 5 at my store.
Didn't stop some new employee from apparently selling 50 to some guy at midnight. I was lucky to get 1!

Is this available online, or B&M only? My store didn't receive any extras for the sale and only had TWO over the weekend, both of which are gone. The next store over is out as well. I was hoping to do a Site To Store.

looks like some kindles will let you check email. not sure about this one....Here is something i ran into
If only Amazon had some kind of, I don't know...website, maybe, to check and see what features are available on these Kindles so that people could very simply go there to check the specs, rather than asking on here...

coolbreeze, thanks for the deal post & info on the Kindle touch. I got in on this deal, but when my mom went to her store the guy said they only had one left and it wasn't ringing up right so no one would buy it. A manager fixed the price and gave her a gift card though. I knew right away it must be a different model & turns out it was the $99 touch. Not sure she'll keep it.
I love my cheap kindle. It's light, has a great battery life, great screen. Perfect for...reading books.
Did anyone find a nice deal for a case for this kindle anywhere?

I found several for the Kindle Fire when I bought one at WM several months ago. Whatever you find at retail stores is likely to be overpriced compared to what you can get it for online.

If money is (relatively) no object, what is the advantage of buying a Kindle Touch 3G (with special offers) at Staples for $149 - $40 GC? Not sure if the $25/$75 can be applied to it, but surely the rewards can, which makes it more attractive to me.
Thanks!

the $80 cannot play music. no speakers or headphone jacks. my daughter has used that one to check her gmail using the mobile gmail site. (no physical keyboard makes composing a message bothersome).

I picked one of these up on Sunday morning. I was going to give it to my Mother, but she doesn't seem interested. If I return this, will I have to return the $30 gift card as well?

No, they will just reduce your refund by $30.I don't want to encourage people to do this, but when they had the Kindle Fire with the gift card, someone reported returning it and getting the full amount back and getting to keep the gift card. YMMV, of course. Of course, that's not the way it's SUPPOSED to work.

At that point they've got your money. Doing it this way means you either have to come back to spend the gift card with them, or simply lose the $30. They're not going to refund that.....

Given that there is a Mother's Day logo plastered on the flyer, right by the Kindle, I assume that this promo will be ongoing next week...
