no one keeps fish around here?

I do.. canisters are a no no in the saltwater reef world. For fish only or freshwater these are great!

Fluvals are decent filters, but Ehiem is where it's at. Definitely worth the extra dough.

They become nitrate factories if not kept clean. I use large amounts of rock and a skimmer. the other nice effect of this.. No money spent on supplies

Green for OP just because I'd like to see more fish friendly deals like this posted around here!

wait, so your rock removes nitrates? i thought only plants did that and water changes. i thought nitrates was the ideal outcome, i mean i know it's toxic. it's the end result of a healthy bio filter.

Nitrates eventually turned back into Nitrogen gas by anaerobic bacteria that live in the oxygen depleted lower areas of your sand or gravel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_sand_bed

This is why many people, myself included, advocate not vacuuming your sand or gravel, you stir up the bed and oxygenate it, which prevents the bacteria from eating nitrates.

I use this method with my planted aquariums and I do 25 percent water changes once a month, in the interim, I just add treated tap water to replace what has evaporated. I do regular water quality checks and all is good.

For saltwater, this is the method referred to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Method

I used to keep a nano reef tank but it was murdered by a house sitter after being established for a year, freshwater tanks are far more resilient.

Regarding this filter, good deal, but I bought a no-name Chinese one off eBay that included a UV sterilizer for the same price and it has been going strong with no problems for 3 years now.

still doesn't explain why canisters aren't useful for reef tanks. the only way i can see to stop the nitrate factory is to prevent decomposing matter to start with.

i've also found some ppl calling the anaerobic bacteria ecoli, found any negatives to that from your experience?
