Yeah, it can only slow charge off of a standard phone micro USB cable. Although the special cable tends to break in a month, so you'll likely be stuck with slow charge anyway.

I use mine daily and have for 8 months or so. They don't break if you're careful when using inserting the tips. No different than a cell phone charger.

AFAIK, you need the cable to charge. Standard micro USB cable won't charge the Nook Color. Without the high current AC adapter, you will charge very slowly. Without the Nook USB cable, you can't even charge.
