Learn about new Beyond Talk device upgrade rules

What are the new device upgrade rules?

Starting May 27, 2012, if you are using the $25, $40, or $60 Beyond Talk plan and you upgrade to a Beyond Talk Smartphone launched after May 1, 2012*, you will need to switch to the $35, $45, or $55 Beyond Talk plan. When you switch plans, you will need to pay for your new plan and you will lose any minutes, messages, and money in your balance. This will also change your monthly payment date. So if you are considering upgrading to a new smartphone, we recommend that you wait until right before your next monthly payment date to activate.

*The following smartphones launched before May 1, 2012 and are therefore not subject to the new device upgrade rules at this time: VentureTM, LG ® OptimusTM Slider, HTC ® Wildfire STM, Motorola TriumphTM, LG ® Optimus VTM, Blackberry ® CurveTM 8530.

Why are you introducing new device upgrade rules? Why does it cost more now?

Like all carriers, Virgin Mobile needs to make changes in order to continue offering the best possible products and services. Virgin Mobile has been able to keep our plan pricing the same for many years. Now, to ensure that we continue to deliver top of the line smartphones to our customers without a contract at competitive prices, these changes are necessary. At $35 per month for Unlimited Data & Messaging, we still have one of the best Android plans available. And even with a no-contract phone costing more upfront, our Beyond Talk plans will still save you money and provide the convenience and flexibility to change your plans as your needs change.

What is a smartphone?

Smartphones are built on a mobile operating system (like Android™ or BlackBerry™) with more advanced computing ability and connectivity than feature phones.

Who will be affected by the new device upgrade rules?

Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk customers who are on the $25, $40, or $60 Beyond Talk plans as of May 27, 2012 and who upgrade to a Virgin Mobile smartphone launched after May 1, 2012.

Where can I get more details?

Our General Terms and Conditions will be updated on May 27, 2012 to reflect the changes.

What if I never upgrade my phone?

At this time, you won’t have to switch to the new Beyond Talk plans unless you upgrade to a smartphone launched after May 1, 2012.

What if I have a feature phone and upgrade to another feature phone?

At this time, the new rules only apply if you upgrade to a smartphone launched after May 1, 2012.

What if I have a smartphone and I downgrade to a feature phone?

At this time, the new rules only apply if you upgrade to a smartphone launched after May 1, 2012.

What if lose my smartphone after May 27, 2012 and I have to replace it?

As long as you’re replacing it with a phone that was launched prior to May 1, 2012, you will not have to switch plans. However, if you upgrade to a phone that was launched after May 1, you will need to switch to the $35, $45, or $55 Beyond Talk plan.

Yes, LetsTalk has been around some time. This phone is still $149.99 on shelves of Wally locally.

You can get it from Amazon for $94.99.

These phones may be a fire sale starting late May/ early June. That's when the new b.s. pricing change goes into affect on Virgin Mobile.
In short, any new phone to VM as of May '12 will only be available under the 35$ plan, even grandfatheref plans. So I'm thinking they won't have any use for these old phones and will slash the price on them. Really hoping for black Friday prices but that's probably wishful thinking!!

I have an iSpot (clear.com hotspot) curious if I could use GVoice on this phone so I could send/receive free text msgs / make and receive free phone calls through that. In other words, could I use this phone sortof as a dumb terminal, getting my data through my hotspot but dumping onto this phone. (Say I download a youtube vid, it'd come through the hotspot, land on the phone, then be played through the phone -- could that happen, with no minutes or data from Virgin?)

Also, is it possible to set up blue-tooth or USB mouse and keyboard to this thing?

Any information appreciated -- TIA

Is the link reliable?or this phone is absolutely in promotion?

Couldn't find info on the "b.s pricing", please advise...do you mean the $35 plan will be the minimum / lowest plan?
If that's the case, no problem, I need the 300 minutes and the phone and plan work for others I know using this combo on VM...

Let's talk has been around since 1999, when you could walk under a table in Spidey underoos.
It is a decent phone, easily unlocked for tethering, but VM now throttles after 2GB a month.

The plan that's $35 dollars for new customers used to be $25. Those of us who started with that plan at $25 have up until now been "grandfathered" in, meaning the price has remained $25, even if upgrading to a new phone. Starting May 27th, if you want to upgrade to a new phone (seems to currently only mean new phones coming out after May 1st), you lose the $25 per month price and get bumped up to $35, so the only way to keep the $25 option is to not upgrade phones.

I will check it out. Thanks for the info on LetsTalk. Does the site appear all wrong for others? Forgive me for judging a book by its cover but in this case the site is barely usable.

I've found this whole affair to be vague, but reading about this in other forums suggests that the grandfathered plan will end when one makes any kind of change of one's phone after May 27. It's not limited to upgrading to a new model, it's really just changing to any phone different to whatever one currently has/had. If anyone has more clarity on the subject, please share.

What would happen if you lose the phone under grandfathered plan and you replace with a new phone? Would you be automatically bumped up to the $35 plan?

There is no advantage to switching phones before the 27th because the phone-swap-kills-grandfathering provision went live on May 1.

I asked VM about this on their facebook page and they said you could change to a phone that was released before 5/1/12 and still be grandfathered. However they deleted the post after a day so not sure if they changed their mind....

FWIW ... I bought a used Optimus V from eBay. Arrived two days ago (Monday) ... and was able to transfer my $25 plan from the awful Samsung Intercept to the Optimus V ... no fee ... same plan. Nothing changed ... except I have a much better phone. I paid $65 + FS for a mint condition phone. This might be a better deal since its new.

Sounds to me like just another way to KICK people off the grandfathered plans when they need another phone and make more money.. Virgin Mobile better watch out ,,others are dropping their prices..

Oh, thanks much! Finally some clarification. Glad to see that "old" phones are exempt from the cost upgrade.

Show me another $25 prepaid smartphone provider that offers unlimited texting and data that I can go to when i lose my grandfathered plan. There isn't one. That's how they can get away with this.

And that link says old phones are not subject to the new requirement "at this time." So they could be subject to them at some point in the future.

$78 Shipped is still alive

The Optimus (one) line of phones is really a nice phone fo the price/plans. They aren't speedsters by any means but very usable. They are great options for teens and much more affordable while maintaining the features of an iphone. For example I got an Optimus T for $65 and a $30 plan (100 minutes/unlimited everything else) for my son and he is more than happy.

Legit? It's old but at $78, you cant ask for more.
Value for money!

I cant figure out how to buy the phone without picking a plan. Everytime I go to checkout without a plan it kicks me back to pick a plan. Anyone know?

The best alternative at the moment is the T-Mobile $30 100 minute/unlimited txt/unlimited 4g plan. You could technically Skype your outgoing calls and just use your 100 minutes for incomming calls. That'd bring it up to $32.99, but you'd also have the advantage of having a decent data plan on your phone. I love my $25/m VM plan and I've never dropped a call, but their data is shoddy/slow as hell. The biggest issue with supplementing the T-Mobile plan with Skype is that Skype apps drain your battery really fast if you leave them open...so it's a solution with some major pros and cons...
