Finally, the current Apple TV is available in the Apple Store. This is the first time to show up in the refurb store, so I can imagine they will go quick. Free shipping as well

Sadly no not yet. A jailbreak is inbound for the A5 ipad3 but all involved have stated that the Apple TV 3rd gen will not be addressed in that release.

Very correct, foot. Now don't hate, but there is a noob friendly, turn key paid ($29.95) for process here that claims the ATV 3 jailbreak is right around the corner. It also has a laundry list of features common jailbreak won't. Worthy for people daunted by normal jailbreak process. You know, the classic, "SSH wha?" response.

I almost bought one without knowing they haven't been jail broken yet. I guess I will have to stick it out with my Roku for now.

Of the half dozen items I've bought at the Apple Online Store Refurbished section, none has ever had a problem. As good as brand new (probably better tested, in fact).

clarifying for some: Firecore / seas0npass depends on other jailbreakers to figure out the jb first, then incorporate into seas0npass. Right now only works on atv2 with 5.0 and lower and the main jb community have stated multiple times in blogs and twitter that the atv is getting harder and harder to jb...firecore has no idea when or if it'll be ready, look at their past posts you can see that they always say it's around the corner every time ios has been upgraded...fact is they jb the same ios version on other a5 devices first, then firecore ports to the atv if they can...sometimes really quickly, but the last one took almost i month if i remember right
the $85 price for refurb atvs pop up all the time on apple outlet - I got 3 atv2's for this same price last year - if you want xbmc, then I highly recommend you wait until the jb is confirmed
one also don't need to buy atv black for their jailbreak tool (seas0npass) - but HammerinHank is correct that it's more newb-friendly

If your are an Apple family, then there is probably more compatiblity with your devices. However you can get a pretty good Roku iOS app for $1.99 that will control your box over wifi. Apple TV has a faster processor than Roku. If you have an iPAD 2 or later you can do "mirroring" to your HD TV. Roku does NOT have youtube, but they do have "alot" more channel offerings. For those the reasons listed above, I have both.
anybody know if apple once in a while still carry the previous gen apple tv (new or refurb)?

Great timing, OP. I was just thinking over the weekend that I wanted one of these and when I buy Apple products, I always buy refurbs. Big green thanks.

does this enhance the quality of the youtube vids? Since most of the uploads are designed for their portal viewing how will it look if it's displayed on a bigger LCD TV?

Intended as a reply to the above, "How is this compare to WD TV Player Live?" didn't get that right though.
WD TV is better if you aren't buying your music/tv/movies through itunes, but if you are buying through apple the apple tv just works and basically anyone can use it. Personally I would not own an apple tv because they are so limited, but I know quite a few people who do and love them. The couple of people I know that are apple die hards actually own the WD devices as it's highly annoying to deal with apple tv for media not purchased through apple.

I didn't like my Roku since it only had Netflix. How does this compare to the google TV. Does this have a web browser so I can view other videos?

when mountain lion comes out, it will have mirroring - essentially wireless hdmi with your laptop.. I'll have to see it to believe it though - can that much data be transmitted wirelessly without latency in a normal environment? I've seen the youtube preview - seems promising.

It does not have a web browser, but if you have an iPad 2 or 3, or an Apple iPhone4/4S you can mirror to your TV set and surf the internet or watch videos in your Safari Browser in full screen on your TV.
Google TV has Netflix, Pandora, and will integrate with your satellite TV box. I rarely surf the internet on it, but to each his own.
Thanks OP for the posting, it is a good deal but I'll wait until jb is done first.

I like googletv for espn3.
I'll have to read up to see if mirroring works on ipod touch.

My biggest hang-up is the audio out is only digital. I use the Roku to listen to music on my analog audio system. Apple TV requires a newer audio system that has optical audio in.

One of the problems is that you have to have analog audio for Zone 2. I use a digital to analog converter to do this.

I get it at Monoprice. It works very well. Here's the link:
apologize if this is a dumb question but do any of them allow me to play videos through something like VLC media player from my laptop? Basically, can i play d/l'd video content wirelessly from my laptop to some type of box hooked to my tv? and i don't necessarily mean pirated video, just any video that I may have on my machine thanks.

Yes , you can do that easily with any DLNA compatible devices like blu-ray players , WD, netgear stream boxes etc. With apple tv, you can stream using iTunes.

There's a pre-installed app on Roku for streaming of generic video files? When did they release that?
Wow, that could be awesome. Guess I might have to check it out, and if it works, sell the ATV2s while they're still worth something. I just have to see if you can delete everything else in the menu, or hide it, so those apps don't get in the way.
