That stinks. I like cats...but allergic to them..so their replacement in my house is 3 neon fish.
You know what...I used to be allergic to them as well. Somehow I got used to them over time. Same thing with dogs. Think HEPA air cleaners are helping the situation. Some cats have more dander which can cause more of an allergic reaction in some.
Fish are nice, had a cool bow tank at one time....added some Gourami's in there and the next day all my tetra's and neons were gone. Those are some mean fish!
- We have a floor to ceiling tree and cats spend most of their time on the top level. So IMO it doesn't matter what you have on lower levels, they prefer the penthouse. - I'm not handy enough to make something like what others have posted. I have a piece of 2 x 6 wrapped w/ sisal. Used hot glue. Scrap of wood. Its lying on the floor and cats love to scratch it. They sit on it and its heavy enough not to lift when they pull. They scratch the sisal board more than the carpet covered tree. I have sisal boards in a few rooms. Even though there are 4 cats I've only seen one of them pull on furniture and it happens ~ twice/year. I can kick the boards under something to get them out of sight when needed. - I'm sure he's thought of it but if I had giselmey's house I'd change out the pictures on the 3/4 wall and put up shelf pieces w/ unbreakables/books that would act as cat steps so they could get to the top of that wall. Carpet the top of the wall. Beautiful cat
Sorry for your loss nave74. So hard to lose a member of the family.

Thanks! Nice idea, really, but a hard sell with the wife. I had a hard time talking her into having a cat tree inside at all. And she loves her family pics. But I'll keep it in mind, nonetheless!

But you had no problem selling her on the half-naked woman picture on the wall ? that's the wife

Since we seem to have some "cat scratch experts" here, maybe one of you can help me. We have 3 cats, and their favorite place to scratch is the vertical portion of the bottom stair. They destroyed the carpet there, so my brilliant plan was to cover that board with the sisal ropes instead of carpet; I figured they would LOVE to scratch on that. Nope, now they are destroying the top stair. It's a flight of about 20 stairs, so I'm not sure why they didn't just go to the 2nd if they didn't like the sisal, lol.

Here is a (hopefully) temporary solution: apply masking tape to the carpeted risers; cats don't like to scratch tape. (My wife used to have it on the corners of a couch that they liked to scratch.) Note that I do not recommend applying tape to your treads...

Note that I do not recommend applying tape to your treads... I used plastic packing tape when I had the problem. Might be stronger than masking tape.
