i have 3 kids, and they play in my 2000lb pile all day long. if you have kids though, you also know they get sick all the time no matter how much you "sanitize" their play area anyway.

HOW TO DETERMINE COVERAGE: Length x width x depth (all in feet) will give the cubic volume. Divide the cubic volume of the area to be filled by 0.5 cubic feet. This will give the number of bags needed eg. 4 ft. long x 4 ft. wide x 4 in. (.33 ft.) deep = 5.28 cubic feet divided by 0.50 cubic feet gives the number of bags needed (11) in this example.
Here in Texas at my local landscaping supplier I get one yard of play sand for about $30.00 which equals about 2,500 pounds.

would have been useful for one of our recent office pranks
one of our employees was returning from a 3 week beach vacation and to ease his transition back to work we filled his office with play sand, added a cardboard palm tree, shells, inflatable raft and some empty beer cans. Took a while to clean up.

I need to fill in some settled soil under a front walkway for support. Sand just as effective as soil? It'll be packed under the walkway and will be used to buildup the St. Augustine grass area right next to it which has settled as well (due to tree roots drawing out soil moisture as they have enlarged I suspect). I can use soil for the grass but I've used sand in the past for isolated low spots in the yard.

So how long does sanitized sand stay sanitized?
Also, some have mentioned getting cheap sand from a landscaper. You can also get it from a quarry but make sure to ask for mason's sand not construction sand. The mason's sand is the fine stuff that is like beach sand and the construction sand is the coarser/sharper stuff that you would use as the fine aggregate for concrete.

LOL @ Sanitized sand... Sure, it will be cleaner, but only for as long as it remains in a sealed container. Once it's out in the elements, it will be as sanitized as the dirt next to it outside the sandbox.
