Not trying to TC...this is a decent price...but this is a year old model and the newer model retails for $850. So comparing this refurb price to the $850 for the current gen isn't a good indicator of value.

true. but the new model only came out recently with ivy-bridge upgrade. this one still rocks a sandy-bridge and USB 3.0...that's far from old. and seeing you are saving about 50% compared to the new model, I think it's a great deal.

also, I personally have never seen an ultrabook selling for ~$400.

technically these Series 5s are not considered ultrabooks and these have been under $500 on CowBoom numberous times in hte recent past. Still this is a descent deal for a well built ultr portable laptop with a decent return policy. If you want the curent gen ivy bridge Series 5 I have seen it at Frys as low as $650 in the past 2 weeks.

This laptop weighs 3.94 lb. Weight is an important number in ultrabook specs.

For comparison, the 13.3" Macbook Air is 2.96 lbs

Good deal or not I can't find it on the site.

OP's link doesn't seem to be working and searching for 'Samung i5 laptop' doesn't bring the deal mentioned. Am I missing something?

I did a search for it. Site says it is sold out.

Jesus H...that went quick!!!!! I clicked the link about 2 mins after OP and it was sold out then too.

Sold out... but in case they come back in stock, below is the direct link to the item

Good deal OP! Its Apple quality without all the nasty Apple software... Hopefully they will get another batch in.

Sold Out

I just got mine today, and I have to admit, a "grade 7" looks really nice!

So, I have never used "express Cache" before. Is that essentially Smart Response Technology?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Response_Technology

I want to be able to install all drivers and get the laptop up and running without using Samsung's utility programs. For instance, I dont want to use Samsung's Easy Settings.

After I install Windows 7 on the harddrive, then install samsung's express Cache driver... is that it? Or do I need to install samsung's "Easy Settings" utility to control the express Cache?

btw, the first thing I did with the computer was erase all the partitions... but I guess the SSD needs to in a Mac format? (Is express Cache proprietary to samsung?) Check this link below for more information:

EDIT
Hmmm... on closer look, I think the samsung has a HM76 chipset which does not appear to support Smart Response Technology?

jtw,

How's your installation going?

I received mine yesterday, topped up RAM to 8GB, and installed Windows 7 using the license key on the sticker. Now, it's time to figure out what Samsung drivers are useful. I don't think you can enable Express Cache without installing Easy Settings utility, although I haven't tried that yet.

Pretty sweet laptop for half the price of most ultrabooks! Now, I'll wait for SSD prices to come down and will try to figure out if DVD drive can be swapped with BD.

Just curious what kind of battery life you guys are getting. I think I'm around 4 hours but not sure due the time required to install windows, etc. Still trying to figure out which samsung software to install as well.

Thanks.

I've installed all drivers listed at Samsung download page for this laptop. The only utility I installed is Easy Setup, which controls many settings like Express Cache and battery charge level.
This thing is amazingly fast!

I ended up doing the exact same thing. I'm pretty happy with the laptop so far! Its weird that the express Cache has to be formatted using HFS format, but otherwise, its nice! Excellent value!

I just got an OCZ Agility 3 240gb for this laptop... and I'm running into issues with the sata3 controller. In order for me to install the SSD, I have to set "SATA Gen 3" to disabled in the bios, otherwise, windows is unable to install. (I get a unable to format error after selecting the destination drive)

Anyone else have issues when installing a sata3 drive? I currently have a ticket open with Samsung, and suggest sending the laptop in for servicing.

Did you set up the drive first? ie formatting and creating a partition. (from windows or using some other tools)

I had a similar problem with Crucial m4 when trying to install on a brand new drive.
