Good deal but one of the reviews shows a bad "feature."

Standby "feature" won't allow a whole movie to play., January 14, 2012

I wrote to Sony customer service: "Please tell me how to turn off the Automatic Power Off function on the BDP-S185. I cannot get through a whole movie."
Sony customer service wrote back: "I'm sorry that the Blu-ray Disc Player turns OFF by itself during playback. Please note that if any button on the Player or Remote Control is not pressed for more than 30 minutes, the Player automatically returns to standby mode. This is normal operation and cannot be disabled."

What a great feature! no wonder Sony lose money.

With this great feature, Sony calls it "Smart player"

Wow thats a definite no go for me with that issue of standby

I was thinking of getting this bluray player but when i saw this review i pulled the plug. It's odd, however, that there are so many 5 star reviews if this is indeed an issue.

And no Wi-Fi either. There is a reason they are cheap.

Bought one of these from the previous deal (a few weeks back) and it kept making loud clicking noises. Had to return it.

I have one of these. It definitely does not power down while playing back a DVD or Blu-Ray. I think the reviewer had a bum player.

For the price, it's a great player. It's just as quick as my BDV-780W for loading blu-ray discs. Here's what it doesn't have (none of these I consider a show-stopper by any means):

- no WiFi
- no useful outputs other than HDMI (no component)
- noes not work with Sony's Media Remote app on Android/iPhone
- no internal memory for BD-Live support (need to bring your own USB key for storage). Bad news for the three users worldwide that use BD-Live
- No DLNA support. So you can't stream from your own local server

On the upside, it works flawlessly with HDMI-CEC for power and remote control, input switching, etc.

<edit>

For those that don't know, it also has the entire suite of online streaming services (Sony video unlimited, Amazon, Netflix, Vudu, Cinemanow, etc., etc...) Activation on Vudu will yield you a $5.99 credit to use on rentals/purchases for 30 days from activation. Consider it another discount off the price

Thanks! While I don't have particularly high expectation from Sony, it seems hard to believe that they would be so inept to build a bluray player DESIGNED to shutdown mid-movie. I'm tempted.

Am I missing something here??
There is a shipping charge of $7.50 to MD on my order.

That's odd. I haven't taken it all the way through checkout, but in the order summary section on the right, it says "FREE" for the shipping cost.

I placed an order about an hour ago and there was no shipping charge to IL. Did you make sure you picked standard shipping?

Don't know what happened, but I had to order it by phone for the FS.

Set mine up a few days ago and tested it out. Plays just fine with no problems whatsoever - definitely no shutoff in the middle of a movie. Thanks again OP!
