I'm a very long time Verizon Wireless customer, over 12 years. Every two years I upgrade all our phones, and USUALLY am able to negotiate good deals from Verizon by dealing with a B2B department. Two years ago I got Droid Incredibles as a Buy 1 get 1, $100 each net price, minus my $100 New Every Two discount on one of them, and then $100 rebates, so basically 4 free phones, plus 1/2 price cases, etc.
This year I discovered my $100 New Every Two was $50. And, Verizon now of course charges $30 per line for a new phone. And, no deals at all that differed from the Verizon website
However, when I was trying to get a deal, the rep tried to explain to me how the new dataplans were a better deal than remaining on the unlimited plan (which we have on 3 of our 4 lines). I dismissed that, and they then said, "well, I can offer you our Talk, Text and Data Save $10 promotion". I asked for more info, and they said that in response to customer's complaints, they were offering people $10 off their data plan EACH month for a YEAR if you agree to a new one year contract. Since I'm upgrading my phones, I'm going to be getting a new two year contract, so agreeing to a one year contract prior to that is a non-issue. So, that's $10 per month savings x 12 months = $120 x 4 lines in our case = $480. Clearly an attempt by Verizon to stop people leaving in disgust over the new dataplans.
YMMV - I don't have an official plan description or anything I can post, nor can I find anything on my account, but two different reps told me about this promotion. I wanted to post it so others can find it and get the same deal, hopefully it's widely available.
FYI - I then upgraded my phones with the Samsung S3 through Costco which retains my unlimited dataplans plus gives me all this for the same $199.99 price - bluetooth headset, 16gb datacard (no, I don't know the speed), 3 in 1 adapter, 2 leather cases, some other case, and two crappy screen protectors. The Verizon rep (as well as the VZW Support Twitter account) all confirmed that a preorder from an authorized channel (Costco, Best Buy) locks in the unlimited dataplan if you have it.
Spending $200 per phone every two years really is unappealing, this $120 discount goes part of the way, but in two years time I may not upgrade or re-sign a contract. I find the extra fees and lack of incentives frustrating.
Edit 7/17/12 - there is no 16gb datacard included with the Costco deal. It's a Microsim card, which has 16gb in the description, which threw me. Phones arrived today, 7/17/12.
ShadowedBlade said: But doesn't signing up for a new contract mean you need to move to one of their new plans and lose unlimited data?
No. You can keep your unlimited dataplan until your contract expires. So if you do this today, you keep unlimited data for another year. At the end of the year, you still keep unlimited data unless you want to get a new subsidized phone (if you qualify). You could keep using your current phone, or get a new phone without a subsidy, and still keep the unlimited dataplan. Of course, Verizon can change the rules any time they want to...

not bad, almost as good as my verizon promo which is save $20 per month on talk text data on each line.

I already posted my question in the Galaxy thread regarding not seeing the option to keep the unlimited data when ordering through Costco.
But I also wanted to post in here because I got the EXACT same promo you mentioned here. VZW gave me $10 off of my $30 Unlimited data plans for each of my three smartphones for a year..so that's $360 in savings. I just renewed two of my lines (RAZR Maxx) for 2 years, and I'm doing the 3rd this week (Galaxy 3)..so there's no catch to the one year promo because I was going to be under contract anyway.

Was it a one or two year contract extension?
I was told by Verizon that I had to take a 2yr contract but the discount was only good for 1 year.

I think it is... They offered it to me today without me asking

You might want to confirm that buying through costco allows you to keep the discount. I was told by verizon that it locks in the unlimited plan but you will lose the talk/text/data promotion.
I was also told they could probably put it back on my line, but no guarantees

I agree.
I really have no problem with them pricing their service at whatever they want and adding whatever fees they want, that's capitalizm and people can vote with their feet if price/fees are not competitive.
However, I feel Verizon treats people inconsistently and their sales reps stink... I get a different answer each time I call, and they NEVER document what they told you adequately in your account.

Are you sure you aren't locked into a three year contract? 1 year for the promotion, and 2 more years for the upgrade.

I was told it would not be affected.

I called and my line didn't qualify. They said the minimum to get on the promo is 1400 minutes, 2 GB of data, and unlimited text messaging.

Ah. We have 1,400 minutes, 2gb on one line, unlimited on the other lines, and unlimited text. I've modified the title to reflect that.

I got that discount about a year ago. I had a text from verizon stating that I would get $10 off per month for a year. I called the number and sure enough they gave it to me. I also purchased an iphone for my wife and put her on that plan also. Just ask for it and you will receive.

I currently have the $10 credit on two of my lines, (the other two have the $20 forever credit). The $10 run out in August. I called to see if I could extend it another year and was told nope. There is no promotion that they could offer me right now that would extend the $10. I was told to call back in August when the current credit runs out and "see what's available the." LAME!

1 year.
I have spoken to two more people in loyalty department. Both told me it was a 2 year committment, but a 1 year discount on the line.
I suggest you get something in writing... I just went thru an issue where Verizon would not honor a committment made to me (and I have been with them since late 1980's).
When I upgraded in beginning of 2011, they made an exception to the 2yr contract rule which had just gone into effect and let me get a 1 year contract (and pay the 1 yr phone price)...
Then, over a year later, I went to upgrade and they would not let me... they said it didnt matter what I was told, that 1 yr contracts were not available at that time, so I have a 2 yr contract. I showed them my contract end date (which was 1 year), and even an email from the guy who handled it for me, which stated the contract was over in 1 year...still no upgrade.
I ended up getting the upgrade, but only after telling them I was cancelling my Verizon home and business lines, as well as spending a lot of wasted time on phone with them.
So, my advice is, get it in writing, since the standard seems to be 2yr contract and 1 yr discount.

Unfortunately, thats exactly what I checked last year... it clearly showed a 1 year contract end date... but they would not give it to me anyway... I'm just saying...

I put my upgrade order in at the same time (at Costco) and it took just fine, so I'll be fine, as I'll end up with a 2 year contract.
