Here's a question that I've always wondered, would a DOCSIS 3.0 modem improve my Charter cable 30M through-put over my aging ( ~10 year old ) Motorola modem?

Yes. I encourage you to google a bit.

The 30 mbps tier is where DOCSIS 3.0 kicks in. A DOCSIS 2.0 modem is typically accepted by Comcast/Charter/etc for 30 mbps tiers, as it can achieve faster speeds than slower tiers, but will not be able to handle the full speed. DOCSIS 2.0 taps out somewhere between 20 and 25 mbps, depending on factors.

That said, this is only a good deal if you need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem same-day, I got mine for $75 and refurbs have gone for as low as $37.
