FWIW, you can buy rootbeer extract for $5 and a packet of yeast for about $2 (use champagne yeast). You can go to a Pottery Barn and buy some flip top glass bottles for a dollar or two or find some old beer bottles with flip tops. All that's included in the sanitizer package is oxy clean (oxy clean or iodine is sufficient for sanitization). It doesn't take much to make root beer from extract...

$5 + $2 + $8 = $15 vs $18 for the kit shipped which includes instructions. And that assumes your original ingredients are enough to make 4 gallons.

This kit also includes 4x 1 liter plastic bottles that separately sell on Amazon for 8 for $15, and based on the reviews a lot of people like these bottles for brewing beer as well.
after you finish with the kit ingredients, as ProppT has noted, you can buy various root beer extracts to make more using these same bottles. Also possible to make ginger beer and other sodas or beer.
You would not want to use these bottles for anything else, other than root beer, once you put root beer in them. Almost impossible to remove the root beer smell/flavor.
