What was the reason for you being charged twice? Did you go over your allotment, or just get within 100 MB?

I got within 100 MB. Here is my summary: "You've used 942 MB (188%)." No more streaming audio while out and about on the FreedomPop for me.

Yesterday, I turned on my fp router but never had a chance to use it because the friend I was waiting for showed up early. When I check later that evening 1MB usage showed up. I guess just turning it on, then immediately turning it off will incur some usage which gets rounded up to 1MB. This happened because my phone remembered the password and automatically established a connection to the router. This is just wrong, wrong, wrong. What kind of company would do that to their customers. I could understand if I get charged a few kb since the phone had to register with the router, but 1 MB?

Yeah, for those maintaining that this company isn't sketchy:

When I requested an RMA to return the device they said: "Anticipate 12-14 business days for us to receive your device and fully process your refund. If your return is inspected and deemed working with original contents, you’ll receive a full refund minus a restocking fee if your package has been opened."

I followed up about 14 days later and they suddenly said: "Thanks for writing in. Due to the logistics involved in receiving your returned device, assessing its condition, testing its functionality, and processing the refund through your credit card company, it can take up to 90 days for your refund to be fully processed and posted to your credit card statement."

Oh, BTW, I didn't even open or activate the device, so 'assessing its condition' shouldn't be much of a problem considering it's still in its original packaging and probably still sealed.

anyone use this in hurricane Sandy affected areas? how did it fare?

TextTextGREAT PRODUCT DISCUSSION

ANY IDEA WHAT FREEDOMPOP IS CHARGING AS A "RESTOCKING FEE" FOR ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN "OPENED" AND THEN "RETURNED", AND DEEMED WORKING WITH ORIGINAL CONTENTS. I SUSPECT THAT THE FREEDOM SPOT-PHOTON HAS BUILT-IN BATTERIES THAT WILL EVENTUALLY GO BAD. WHEN SUCH A ITEM GETS RETURNED HOW WILL THE COMPANY REACT?

It should work as well as Sprint / WiMax is working. That is their network.

Hey buddy, keep the noize down!

fwiw.....

I "bought" two hotspots and returned one (kept one for my parents' house).

They credited me the full $89.99 about 2-3 days after they received it.

I don't know if it made any difference, but I had tried to cancel the order almost immediately, then asked for a RMA while it was en route. They actually encouraged me to open it and try it out and I made it clear that I wasn't going to allow any restocking fee nonsense.

I would check out the WalMart Internet On The Go (Sprint 3G) deal if you are a light user and just want to test the water. Worst case scenario you'll be out $10 vs $49.99 or $89.99 with FreedomPop.

How do you figure that, the unit is $80 plus refill card.

You can take the router back to the store within 2 weeks as stated in the thread for $80 refund if you are not satisfied but you can't return the used/activated $10 refill card. So $10 out of pocket for trying it out.

My worry is that this service is structured like a ponzi scheme - use new deposits to refund those who return. There has to be a way for the company to make money, or it's going to fail. One way is to charge people for overage, or hope people sign up for the higher data plans. But I think this is going to appeal because of the "free" aspect. I'd rather them charge a few bucks a month and not nickel and dime people, so that the business model makes sense.

I see no $10 card at WalMart
$25.00 I do

I have same problem with this company, the real name of company from state record is STS Media dba freedom pop. It seems like the CEO of this company is very skilled on using social media and tricking people. I saw the ads and went to freedom pop website. I looked through the sites and could not find the contact information, no phone and no location address where the company reside. does this company legit? however, I saw the couple news medias such like Cnet.com, WSL, CNBC,Bloomberg and Time say about this company, and their message directly posted on freedom pop website with their logos. I thought it shall be trustworthy as these many of medias say good about this company, and its device and service. Thus I ordered one the most expensive device(It says the device is free, you just pay the refundable security deposit). After awhile I received the device I run into problem and can not figure out a good way to contact to them for support. Email them takes many days to reply, ask them for the phone number. It was nice that Patrick(freedompop.com) gives this number 888-743-8107, but nobody picks up the phone when I called. Anyway, I searched everywhere, there are many complaints on BBB and FCC, and also the complaints are in comment section after news article regarding freedom pop. I don't hope that I can't get full refund even I don't use it because I have problem to use it. But, maybe we can group up and sue this untruthful company and the medias which help this company by misleading the fact.
Please feel free to contact me via Facebook.

Just received another month of my free 500MB monthly plus my 500MB via connected friends for a total of 0.98GB. Wasn't sure the connected friends would be recurring. I only used up 160MB last month. Once sharing is enabled, I can probably share my unused capacity with a friend.

Having used it for a month, I think the problem is really the web browsing. You can see inaccurate metering in all the web browsing cases, probably because they try to analyse the contents to see you ads -> but to the point that not only costs me more usage than fair, but also cause my pages to not load. On the other hand, non-http based apps, like IM, collaboration, seems to work. But hey, web browsing is really the main use case, and this deal is not working well with that.

I've been using this for about 2 weeks now during my train commute (~35min each way). I use chrome for web browsing, email (thunderbird), and IM chatting. I haven't noticed any inflated data usage at all. It's certainly higher than what I'd expect based on smart phone, but with my laptop I'm using full websites (ie, not mobile) and emails download all the image so it's not really surprise. The only time my data usage was REALLY high was when I forgot to turn off dropbox sync, but that's not really their fault. So far, I'm happy. 500mb/mo wouldn't be enough, but with the 500mb friend bonus it's great!

Unfortunately, there's about a 10 min stretch on my train ride (caltrain, between South SF and 22nd street) where I don't get any signal, but that's what the coverage map said. Looking forward to when they come out with the 3g compatible device.

If you're concerned about monitoring or increased data usage related to HTTP traffic, you may want to set up VPN (try OpenVPN or Hamachi). This will encrypt HTTP and all other traffic from any devices using a FreedomPop device.

Any got this offer in the email. Just wondering what's the catch.

Doan said:   piece of junk!!!! I'm in Houston and can not get 4G signal either in house or on the street. Did you check the coverage map before you ordered? At least for me (and my train commute) I found that coverage map to be impressively accurate for both where it's covered, where it's not covered, and the signal strength.

If your place is supposed to be covered, but you're not getting signal, you have a pretty good reason to complain and I would hope they'd take care of you (ie full refund)

VPN encapsulates your payload, in most cases, it effectively adds overhead in terms of data usage.
Plus VPNs are not free, unless your work space gives you free VPN.

VPN is free if you set up the VPN server on a computer you own using OpenVPN or similar.

Don't some VPNs have compression? On text-heavy uses the VPN should pay for itself, data-wise, by heavily compressing the data. Pre-compressed graphic/audio formats would likely be a wash or a slight increase in data usage for the reason you point out.

I run compressed SSH tunnels to my own web proxy; makes a huge difference in data consumption when I surf compressed with graphics off, and it's a mixed bag with them on. I still prefer to run my traffic through a tunnel for crypto reasons.

BN: i use the NZ puck, but am considering the FP one.

They sent out a Black Friday email: "Black Friday Weekend - 2GB 100% Free" but I followed the link and saw no description of the offer. Probably 1 month's worth.

Their black friday email seems deliberately vague or plain incompetent.

I'm in for one to give it a try. Seems like a neat idea for have for an occasional use once or twice a month (don't know why i wouldn't just tether iphone) but i'm still in to try.

Has anyone used their new attachment for iPod Touch? It says it will convert Touch into iPhone, is that true? What apps would let me make calls with touch + wifi? I know about text+ but I thought that was only for other text+ users, not any phone...

You can get grooveip or talkatone. talkatone is free but grooveip is not. Beware, you get what you paid for. I only use grooveip.

Update: I had been putting off signing up with FreedomPop, but took one for the team to test this "Black Friday Weekend - 2GB 100% Free" claim. Signed up during the Black Friday promo by following the email link. Took me to FP website with a popover that had language similar to the email. I signed up from that popup.

So far there is no evidence that 2GB are attached to my account in any way. I'll give it a few days before I inquire about it.
Maybe they mean if you sign up for 2GB plan you'll get a free month? Anyone actually get "2GB 100% free" out of this promo?

Good news to leaven the {bad.} I've had excellent luck with the freedompop friends thread over on SD. Gathered 41 friends (410MB extra) in a few days with little effort.

I used talkatone a lot from hotels, and while less than perfect, it works pretty well 97% of the time.

Has anyone heard when the iPhone sleeve is supposed to be available? I don't see any mention of it on the FreedomPop site, only the iPod sleeve.

DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY!

Seriously. I pre-ordered the iphone sleeve back in March. I have since sent several e-mails and filled out the online contact forms on their site attempting to get a refund for my $99 pre-order - which they conveniently charged me for back then, and they have refused to respond.

Any company that charges full price for a pre-order is suspect to begin with, but the fact that they refuse to even acknowledge my refund requests despite the fact that they are attempting to get new customers to continue to give them money is obscene. Of course they guarantee a full refund at anytime, they obviously have no intention of ever giving refunds anyway, so why not make outlandish promises.

UPDATE:

It turns out that no matter how many times you request a refund, they will not do it until they confirm with you via e-mail. It would seem that Gmail sends these messages straight to your spam folder, so if you never confirm the e-mail, you never get your refund.

I finally found the responses in my spam folder, confirmed about 3 times, and finally got my refund. If you have similar problems, make sure to check your spam folder for their e-mails - because they will absolutely not cancel your account until you respond, no matter what.

In for a hotspot.

Ordered at 5pm and it was on my doorstep the next morning. Impressive. Guess getting you the device is not the issue.

There does appear to be some data registered to your account before you even connect. I turned it on and let it idle for a couple hours:
Date Time Source Data Used
Dec 8, 2012 4:30 PM Plan Usage 20 MB
Dec 8, 2012 3:30 PM Plan Usage 4 MB
Dec 8, 2012 3:15 PM Plan Usage 2 MB

At 4:30 I attached my laptop and ran a speedtest.net which I think accounts for the 20MB

Its been idle since but billing is delayed so don't know if it will use mroe data after the initial burst will report back, but it seems like you can't use it for 24/7 on the free plan.

Speed is pretty bad, 4Mbs down and .3Mbps up. 77ms ping. Light is orange indicating "good" signal. Chicago Suburbs (Naperville) dark green on the coverage map. Sitting in my dining room.

But its useable for surfing and whatnot. Will see how it does on my commute. It took a really long time to lock on so I'm afraid it won't be good on the train.

For those complaining about getting your money back. Did you get the sleeve or the hotspot/modem. Their site is pretty clear (or at least as clear as anything is on the badly worded T&C) that the sleve is not free. For the sleve a restocking fee makes perfect sense. You should not be surprised paying for that.

I think the "handling fee" on returns for the modem/hotspot is a bit misleading. I will complain when I return my device.

Also, noticed they don't take AMEX. With AMEX I would have had no fear getting my money back. With my citi visa I am less confident. But its still the cheapest way to get small amounts of data on the road.

I bought a 3G usb stick off Virgin Mobile for $10 (+$5 FatCash) to use as a backup when 4G isn't available. Its $5 a day for service but I don't intend to use it often. For a paid plan its the next best thing for infrequent users like me.

UPDATE: the leakage when not attached was just on the first startup. I left it running and not attached and no data. Not bad for "free". I set a reminder to return the device in 11 months so I can try and get my "deposit" back less whatever their handling fee might be at that point.

FreedomPop has opened beta signups for their new in-home router (wifi and ethernet connections). Users get 1GB of free data per month, as opposed to the 500mb free with the mobile hotspot.

May be a good alternative for people in the WiMax foot print who don't stream videos or download a lot of media (grandparents and old people, etc).
