Wonder what this does that a simple tablet couldn't do? I tried to look up reviews, but could only find mostly fake ones (e.g. the same review posted under different names).

It's probably designed when iTablets we all $500 and over and docks were as much which made this a somewhat of a value proposition. However, with the electronic gadgetry industry being what it is with hyper-shortened product lifecycle, this product is likely relegated to the day late, dollar short category. The other possibility is that this is positioned for those that just don't want to deal with computer products. Failing to take into consideration the ease of use and portability of today's affordable Android based media consumption devices.
