Well if it's any consolation, I got a Kodak brand charger w/4 pre charged AA's at target for $6 on their clearance pile

This is the better deal. Energizer still does NOT offer a pre-charged (low self discharge) battery. So they always lose charge quickly and even worse, soon lose mAh capacity. Most applications call for pre-charged.

not in my experience, nor have i seen an application "call for" pre-charged
