Any comments on these shoes - never tried this type

I have a pair of these. I was unsure at first, but I have been wearing them for two or three months now and I really like them. I like wearing them when I go hiking so I can feel the ground. The sole is thick enough that rocks do not really hurt, but thin enough to feel them. The only thing I really do not like these shoes for is long walks on concrete. I will buy another pair when these wear out. Oh, they also seem to hold up pretty well too. Hope this helps!

The sole is significantly more rigid than a Vibram sole, which is extremely flexible. The sole of the Vibram is at most 3 mm, whereas this is a thicker sole (clearly, since it is less flexible). FiveFingers also provide a slot for every toe, whereas this combines the last two toes into one "pocket."
Basically, the Fila provides arch support/padding and will not necessarily strengthen your feet whereas the Vibram provides very little in the way of support and you can expect your feet to toughen up. These are not even in the same category. They have more in common with an athletic sneaker than a minimalist shoe.
