I ordered one. It's from Amazon, so hoping they can help deal with the seller if it doesn't work.

Yeah, i did some research on Amazon. It does seem like some of the 3rd party cables are bad, but according to the reviews for just the lightning cable from the same company "boxwave", it seems pretty positive and sounds like it works just fine:

I think Apple will NOT warranty your iPhone 5 (should something happen) if you use a third party lighting/charger cable.

Wow, that;s tempting. Especially with 'special offers' - buy ine, get the second 30% off - so that's about 44 shipped for 2 sets. That is like BOGO if the cables are good. More than likely a reverse engineered knock-off. Don't risk damaging your iPhone 5 just to save a few dollars on the lightning cable.

I ordered Boxwave iPhone5 case from Amazon few weeks back. It didn't fit properly as I couldn't use volume buttons. When I tried to return, Amazon said I need to pay return shipping.
So, I am not sure if it applies to all items from the seller or only certain items.
I am definitely NOT buying from this seller.
