If you make less than $31,000 AGI or are active duty military with $57,000 or less you can get TurboTax for free online. Additionally, you can e-file federal for free. If you qualify for a Free Federal filing, you may also qualify for FREE STATE filing in the following states: AR, AZ, DC, DE, GA, IA, ID, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NY, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, VA, VT, WV.
If your state does not sponsor a Free File Program, you can still prepare and file a state return within the Freedom Edition for only $14.99 (credit card required).
Or if you are military, you go tot he free tax office on base...includes free e-filing fed and state.

TaxAct.com is another free option. There's no income limit. The federal return is free, and you can optionally pay for your state return. (Or just file a standard paper state return based on your federal return.)
