Goodie. If I have a flat tyre on my motor bike during my holiday, I can call for help on my mobile and then eat some biscuits.

Would you be calling from the Motor way to let your mum know that you'll be late for Tea Time but will be home by the supper time ?

how droll, dsj.

So would this be good for travelinng to UK, and also roaming in France and Italy? Want minimal voice, but lots of texts (to/from USA) and some data. Have an unlocked GSM phone.

I'm not sure how they send this particular sim card to people who don't live in the UK, but if there is an international shipping and handling cost, it might be cheaper to just buy a sim card when you get to the UK - they are available all over the place there, usually even in the airports.

Before you go, you can look up the various sim cards and charges, and see what plans suit you, and how much the various cell phone companies and the particular plans charge for texts to and from the US.

You can look for this online - there are many comparison websites for UK mobile plans.

This site may or may not give good info: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/. Look under the Mobiles tab.

I think roaming from France and Italy would probably be expensive with the sim card the OP mentions, or with any other regular UK sim card.

There are threads here about various solutions people have used for this kind of situation (best sim card/plan for travelling around Europe), so you might do a search.

Though it might be cheapest to buy pay-as-you-go sims in each country.

I am not up on the technology, but I think you can text and call people and receive texts and calls for free using Googlevoice and/or other websites/apps that people here mention all the time, so you might get by with that.

T minus 40 days until our flight to London. (and then Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Germany)

I have a free night booked @ Heathrow using the IHG best rate guaranty.

I have ordered several free prepaid sims to be shipped to that hotel.

(Guest services knows the packets are coming in my name and have agreed to hold for my arrival)

I have two in hand (shipped free to my USA address):

25mb of data are preloaded on each sim. RL data roaming rates are better than most alternatives. (but they don't work in Istanbul)

1)If folks want info on minimizing data usage through software tricks, I'll start a new thread.

2) If folks want info how I solved my Istanbul problem, I'll start a new thread.

NB My original post linked to a UK deal-board where the Full Monty promo was discussed by savvy Brits esp the UK CashBack sites that make it free for 30 days. The mods decided to edit that post. YMMV
