8 reasons the Nokia Lumia 521 is better than the Samsung Galaxy S 4†† http://pocketnow.com/2013/06/05/8-reasons-lumia-521-is-better-gs4

††
I can agree to 1 of 8 reasons...price is cheaper.† Rest is subjective. Only reason I am buying Nokia 521 is because it only costs $85...not because it's better than Samsung G4. If Samsung G4 costs only $170, then no... I would not buy Nokia 521.....I would pay extra $85 and buy S4.†

† Yeah, for me 1 (price) and 4 (offline navigation) are big plus and many of the other points have some merits, but price really is by far the biggest reason to go for a Lumia 520/521 over the high-end devices. The phone I really want is the Lumia 925, but at a price difference of $400+ (comparing off-contract to off-contract), it's hard to justify, even if it's a much better phone.†

† I am very happy with my 521, and can see their point on some things, but no, I don't believe that my Lumia 521 is in any way a "better phone", hell, if the S4 came with WP8 I might be interested in one, but it doesn't, so no matter how great it is, I don't see myself as being interested. Honestly, if I was spending that much money I would be looking hard at the Lumia 1020, which still may not stack up as well as the G4, but does have WP8, and would be my choice.

This might be a dumb question, but here goes: I'm currently on AT&T and have an expired contract (for four phones). I want to switch, and T-Mobile looks appealing. If I buy three of these Lumia 521's, can I join T-Mobiles post-paid "Simple choice Plan" and bring this device? When I check their website, this phone is not listed under "bring your own phone" option, yet they have this phone for sale in their store? I'm inclined to believe that this phone will work on that plan, but I'm hoping someone on FWF that has this phone and is on a post-paid TMobile plan can confirm? Thanks in advance.

† If I hadn't of washed my galaxy...oops.....I would still be using it.† But, I'm not about to pay the price for another one and picked up the 521 when it first came out as my replacement.† That said, I will keep using it until a sub $200 price for a galaxy S4 or HTC One rolls around without contract.† That may never happen.† The 521 is stable and pretty solid for the price.

††

there should be no issue whatsoever using this phone on TM post paid.† TMobile no longer has contracts and this phone comes with the sim card to first activate it w/Tmo. It is not a PRE activated phone, you can activate it on a post paid plan.

For those of you with cards from BofA, please note that there is an additional $5 off if you activate and redeem the HSN deal along with any other BankAmeriDeal.

For example, I combined the HSN deal with the 10% off at Chili's deal so that basically brings the price of the Nokia 521 to about $65 plus tax and free shipping. However, you don't have to select the Chili's deal - any other BankAmeriDeal also will work.

$100 - $20 - $10 - $5 = $65

I had never used BankAmeriDeals before so maybe the extra $5 off is only for first time users?

Green for the OP.

....these HSN boyz take quite a bit of time to ship.......my order is still "packing"......ordered on Saturday (14th) and it's Wednesday 18 September.......must have a bunch of orders......??

†Well, it is still Tuesday night in most of the US....
My order was shipped on Monday morning.†

Thanks, picked one up today $85. I'm moving to T-Mobile. Little hesitant on WP8 but for the price, I'm willing to adjust.

You will love it. I have guys calling me up cribbing about windows phone 8 initially but eventually they start loving it. Refreshing!

† WP, unlike WindowsRT, is a slowly but surely growing community. It's already at 10% marketshare in some parts of Europe. App quality has always been high and the app counts are on the rise, although still nowhere near iOS or Android. I'm sure there will still be an adjustment period, but WP is a very capable mobile OS. Enjoy!

I bought my last Nokia phones mostly because of the offline navigation. A GPS with lifetime map updating will cost about the same. But my Nokia "GPS" can make phone calls, take pictures, and go online.

Is there an app with this phone for free voice calling like talkatone or groove IP?

has anybody been able to manage to unlock the phone (not a TMo customer)

how to unlock?

mail2genious said:   has anybody been able to manage to unlock the phone (not a TMo customer)
† From everything I've read, Lumia521 unlock codes are very expensive and not really worth it. Check out the Lumia520 (http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1294609/) - it's virtually the same phone but locked for AT&T. Unlock codes for the 520 are about $3 on eBay.

I had this phone on MetroPCS and really liked this phone. Metro sells this in store for 99. I returned this because the phone goes on the T-Mobile network.(gsm) rather than metro cdma. So the service at my home was downgraded due to poor signal. Thats why I returned. Otherwise its a great phone.

The phone also has the capacity to phone over your wireless home network if the carrier signal is too weak, that feature works pertty good. All in all, Windows 8 is a great operating system, Unfortanatly, with T-Mobile buying MetroPCS, Metro will be phased out by 2015. The migration from Metro's cdma networt to T-Mobile's gsm killed the signal where I live. I need to switch carriers now if I want a smart phone - as all metros new phones are going on the T-Mobile gsm network. Luckily ATT has a strong signal where I live.

It wasnt broke - until they fixed it.

double post

This device does NOT have CDMA capability.

Just get Android and GrooveIP Pro. Solved.
† That app only works so-so.

††
All of them only work "so so" but that depends on your network connection. WiFi is not ideal for VoIP to begin with.

† Would you still get 3G? †Didn't work that way on the Dell Venue Pros.

great phone, but do not expect to get unlocked that easily. If you go the legit route, tmo expects you to be on their network for 60 days (or 90??) plus spend min $51 dollars. Afterwords, they will send you the unlock code. As for buying code off eBay or other unlocking sites, I have not heard of a single person who was able to successfully unlock it. I have a feeling there is no unlock code for this out yet and anyone who is advertising it is just there to rip you off.

so overall, if you want to use this phone with another provider that uses the same band, you need to spend $50 more and wait 60 days .

I am on Tmobile prepaid and got the unlock code.†

† I am on the same boat and will see if I can get the unlock code for it. I have unlocked lots of Tmobile phones before because I am Gold member.

does this phone had front facing camera...

† No. It does not.†

This phone is great. Does everything I need.

Does everything I need also, will be going to tmobile and unlocking mine shortly.

For those that live near a Microsoft Store and have not pulled the trigger on the Lumia 521, check out this Hot Deal Thread (credit to dallasburn):
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/1303067/††

Basically, the Microsoft Store has Lumia 521 for $99 and is also offering a $25 voucher if you watch a OneNote demo.†
Price becomes $74 before taxes.† Just walk out the door with it (no waiting for it to ship).

You can check the locations of Microsoft Stores at:
http://content.microsoftstore.com/en-us/home.aspx

Use the phone for few days.†everything is good except the battery life. it will out of battery after 4-6 hours surf.
It can also last for 24 hours under light use and turn on battery saver.
Windows 8 Amber update also improves the battery life.
update: use for 1day 5 hours, still has 25% left.
