I think most college students would be happier with a $40 Push2TV...

I think the $75 AppleTV refurb from Apple.com is a far better deal. Anything google is going to get very expensive in the coming years as their ad revenue starts to dwindle due to the resurgence of Yahoo.

Uh..  What the heck are yo talking about?  Oh yeah, you have no idea.   Great deal OP... Wish I still had a .edu

For what it's worth I have a chromecast, apple tv, and a Roku. I would say the chromecast is a total waste of money, the apple tv the only thing it's got going is mirroring my ipad thats about it. The Roku can do sooooo much more as far as content it's crazy good not only can you get 100's of free channels through the channel store you can get 1000's of free "unknown" private channels from news to free porn, from educational to sports. Yes I love my Roku. Give me red but that's ok. Roku fans will bring on the GREEN and we will have Christmas colors!!!!!!!

I had a Chromecast for about 24hrs and returned it. The guy at Best Buy who took it back said the Chromecast was the most returned item in their store. Frankly, it does so very little I don't see much use for it AT THIS TIME plus it was pretty ugly hanging off the back of the TV (even with the extender cable).

wow, this one is so useful for me. Thanks for sharing.

Didn't get any coupon in the email!

Does chromecast or Roku or apple stream live 'tv', such as live sports or news?

PM me if you want the coupon code

Time Warner Cable has a channel or "app" which lets you watch the cable channels, essentially acting like a cable box. This this requires you actually have an account with them. The reasoning behind it is that if you already paid for cable had another TV which you wanted cable on, but didn't want to pay a monthly fee for another box.

Alternatively, there is a free one called ustvnow, but the quality is not HD, and only gives you the basic 6 over the air channels unless you paid a monthly fee.

I have not found any other ones yet, but would be interested to know if you find others

I do not have Apple TV as I don't like that ecosystem of products, but I have two Rokus and a Chromecast. I like Chromecast because of the mirror Chrome tab to device, which Roku doesn't have. But Roku does have a lot more channels and is a more mature platform.

I got my Chromecast for $35 + 3 months Netflix, so $11 net. For $30 I'm not sure if it's a slam dunk.

  Hehe.

And  yeah, I agree. Plus, the 2 XD (or is it XS?) can be had for $40 bucks regularly, probably can find it for about $30 used..

If I didn't get my chromecast for $11, I would have returned it too. Google is dragging it's feet by not allowing anyone to release any apps. I found out too late that there are some firmware mods but I connected my chromecast to the net and thus allowed google to patch my chromecast and disabling my ability to put on a custom firmware.

Someone answer this for me.. When this was first being announced, I remember hearing something about it being able to power on the television and switch it to the appropriate input, with it just being activated from the phone.

Is this true?

I think this conversation should be more focused towards the free porn

Thanks for the info, as for the chromecast, the only reason I was going to get it the last time, was the free Netflix promotion, but when that was gone, I didn't even though about it.
At $30 and with no content that could be usefull, then what for.

The only real reason to have a chromecast is because it easily streams from Chrome browser on computer to TV. Makes watching stuff on the internet much easier if you don't have a HTPC or a good way to stream to TV currently.

Some day, when Chromecast does supports more than just output from Chrome, it'll be a steal at $35.

But right now, most people just don't have a lot of use for it.

Right now this is true.  Mine is collecting dust, but that will change.  Certainly a cool toy for $11 -- brimming with potential at $35.  Google continues to shoot themselves in the foot.

As you said, the best current use of a chromecast is to stream chrome tabs.  So, hulu, Netflix, etc.  Most would be better off with a comparably priced Push2TV because it can mirror whatever is on the screen to the tv which would be better for collaboration.

Guys, how much is a chromecast if it's not for sale or on deal?

$35

I got one for free at an IT event a few months ago. I think it shows a lot of promise and is at a very nice pricepoint. Primarily, I only use it for Netflix, which I had been using my BluRay player, but the Chromecast is so much faster to launch. One place these could really be useful is travelling. All you need is wifi and a tv with HDMI and you can have Netflix on the road and on a real TV.

I could never find it on my HP Slate 7. Anyone having the same issue with your tablets?

I agree, I use this chromecast in the beroom tv for Netflix and thats about it. Roku is much better!

Since everyone is praising Roku, I'd figured that a deal on Roku might be in order:

Did you set it up with your phone, or is it still "offline"?  If you set it up with your phone and your tablet is using a different Google Account, that could be the problem.

Not only do they need to be on the same network, but they also have to be associated with the same Google Account.

Chromecast is useful if you use Chrome browser ... 'cast tab' works fine. 'cast screen' is still in Beta and has its share of issues.
As for apps building it in, they are coming one by one. Guess, that is not a selling point now (unless you have not way to view Netflix/Youtube currently on your TV).

Sadly, you can't even connect a portable HD to watch home movies. Yes, I know it can stream the movies from another computer, but booting and powering yet another machine defeats the purpose. Ideally Google would let us connect it to a USB hub. That way we could plug in HDs or USB wired Ethernet jacks, etc.

Mine was used for Netflix and YouTube initially but it's being used less and less every week now. I agree with the others, Google is blowing this one.

I use Aereo on my Roku.

green for OP. I bought three of these at launch, these will make great gifts for my brother and nephews. Now I dont have to look underneath the couch or ask my son or nephew where the blu ray player remote is everytime I want to watch Netflix.

  Same here.

Ruko is better but chromcast is great if you are traveling a lot for business.

Still no coupon

Yes. Requires that you use external power to the device (not from a USB/HDMI port on the TV) and requires support from your TV.

I have a 5+ year old TV and it works for me.
