Teleflip™ started when the founder became increasingly frustrated at his inability to send text messages to friends' cell phones from his PC. It was of course possible, but you had to know the cell phone provider, the correct domain name and the correct syntax for the email address. There had to be an easier way....Teleflip™ was born.
Sweet, looks good - but does anyone want to take bets on how long it will remain "free"? :-\

I dunno, it is pretty good technology, but as it is, i hate putting my cell # down on most applicationas for fear of getting a million marketing calls to my cell . . . now they have your cell #, whether they spam using SMS or over voice, it might suck
You can use this Area Decoder to look up a number...just enter the 10 digit number in the field for all the details.

Anyone know how I can find out what mobile provider a phone number belongs to? >>

alternatively, AIM supports sending instant messages to all cell phones that support text messaging. Just click 'Setup', then 'Add Mobile', and then the phone number you wish to send messages to. Now you'll have that cell phone on your buddy list and you can send messages like it was a direct chat. This works even better if the receiving phone supports AIM instant messaging because they can easily respond back.
Another great feature I found out about yesterday is the ability to forward instant messages to your cell phone while you are in away mode.
Actually, that site doesn't work very well anymore now that number portability has taken hold. It only goes by the area code and first 3 digits of the phone number. So, it only shows which company "owned" that batch of numbers prior to number portability.
For that matter, teleflip also has a few months delay in updating their systems (according to their website). I just sent a message to my phone using teleflip, but received nothing. I suspect it is going to my old carrier.

Not as good as just using AIM to send SMS. All you gotta do is type in '+1phonenumber' as the screename and send the message. Works quick! Try it! not many people know about this feature.

I have bee using a redirect for my cell phone for a while. Basically since I own my Domain I give people my Mobile@domain.com and it just redirects the email to my 123345@cellprovider.com email address. I would think using this service above is just a way to build a HUGE database of Valid Cell Phone email addresses so they can sell them later or even worse somebody hack their system and steal them and then your Local Number Portability where you keep your phone number will suck as you will need to block your phone email. If you setup an alias/domain you can filter what messages get to your phone. I would just be careful as cell phone spam overseas is a BIG problem.

This might be a little off topic, but does this work from other compatible IM programs? What does everyone use here for IM? I havent used IM in years, and was wondering what the best program(s) were these days.

Reminds me of bluemountain, where sending out a greeting-(or whatever)-card was agreeing to them spamming the addressee (and you of course). No merci. here is a list of the most common providers I use...
Do they charge for reading messages the same as as receiving a call or is it an additional charge on top of that?

Actually, TMOBILE considers it an SMS message. You may (Or may not) have a bucket of SMS messages to send/recieve per month.
I think I have around 1300 I can do per month without additional charge.
Skipping 31 Messages...

I have another question. Does anyone know if you can send ringtones to another phone via sms or email using metropcs? For example, say a friend of mine has a ringtone that she/he downloaded on their phone, and they have textmessaging. Could they send it to me?
