If you have seen those infomercials for the "Little Giant" ladders made by Wing, Inc you have probably wanted one. But the "4 easy payments of $89" for a 17' ladder kept you from calling. Werner ladder company makes a clone, or a knock-off, or perhaps a licensed copy (?) of the Little Giant for a lot less. Lowes carries them, and for some reason has really low prices on these. There normal price is $99 for the 13' ladder and $198 for the 22' model. Werner makes 17' and 26' models, but Lowes does not seem to carry them. The 13' is $180 at Amazon and the 22' is $250, these are $140-244 on fleabay - so the Lowes prices are pretty good all the time. Both of these ladders are rated for 300lbs of beef to be on them, so they are big enough for most of us

Now through July 11 if you purchase any Werner ladder for $99 and up at Lowes they will mail you a $25 gift card. This makes your "net" cost $74 and $173.

From what I read the Werner version of these ladders are not QUITE as well made as the real "Little Giant" ladders - and they are made in China, not the good old USA. But Little Giants are very expensive - $340 - $400 for the 13' and 22' models on Amazon and fleabay. So if you get most of the same thing for a LOT less money, then it should be a good deal ?

Link to 22' ladder at Lowes for $189

I am going to pick up a 13' model - I have a 22' Little Giant as well (purchased on a different discount deal that is now over) so I will let you know how they compare. But I couldn't resist $74 for another (smaller and lighter) multi-ladder.

Nice post Dennis, thanks. It looks like one of the differences is no work platform with the werner model I saw.

Does anyone know if one of these can be seperated and used with a platform between the sides (like a plank) as someone said you can do with the little giant?

Yes, the package (I picked it up but have not used it) says it includes the exra "hinges" so you can split it into 2 short step ladders. It also includes a storage case - but it is not clear if that case is for the whole ladder or the hinges

Lowes carries some platforms as well. The Little Giant platforms expand to you can have a long scaffold that stores in a smaller space. I don't know if the Werner/Lowes platforms do this or not. You can get a little more info at the Werner web page - the link is to the main page since they use forms a direct link to the MT series does not come up right. It does state you can use it as an extension ladder, step ladder, stair ladder, and scaffold base. The 13' ladder would make a 1' - 2' scaffold base.

Click on product catalog, extension ladders, browse, then choose MT series

A reviewer on Amazon reports that Werner responded to their e-mail that a work platform, stabilizer, and (maybe) a leveler would be available this fall. The last two items may already be available now, but I did not see a usable work platform on the Werner site.

My Little Giant came with a "free" platform and it is handy and does support the same weight as the ladder (300lbs).

Dennis

I should also mention that Home Depot carries a made in China clone of these ladders under the "Gorilla Ladder" brand name. I looked at them a while back and I think the prices were similar - $99 for a 13' ladder and $200 for a 22'. I did a quick search just now and the $99 13' was the only one that came up on their web page, but I am pretty sure they had 2-3 different sizes in the store when I looked at them. No other discounts or GC on them right now either.

Dennis

i have the werner 16' one purchased at home depot for about $125 and i have to say it is a great ladder.

I've got a 13' Gorilla ladder, I bought at HD for $99.
It may not be the best ladder on the planet, but for the 4 times a year that I need to use it, it works very well.
Solid construction, great functionality and adaptability. Probably all the ladder a normal home owner needs.

Costco carries a 17 ft version of Werner ladder with extra hinges for $99. Bought it last week.

My hamster would love this ladder!

good find op. you seem to know a lot about this item. will you please look at the two ladders that costco.com has and make a comment about them?

I saw a posting about the 17 FOOT being at Costco, but there is none near me and I don't have a membership. I went back and forth between getting the 17' and 22' Little Giant, since there was not much difference in the price (and I have a 2 story house) I opted for the 22'. In the back of my mind I figured I would get the 13' Werner some time - something that is smaller/shorter and lighter. I also figured if it was not quite as sturdy, it would not bother me much since I would be closer to the ground

I have a step 5' step ladder and a 20' extension ladder I need to get rid of now. I used them rarely because I did not feel safe on them at all. The extension ladder was gift from my wife - since I would not get up on the house and hang Christmas ornaments. I still will not with the "cheap" extension ladder she gave me

Looking at the Gorilla is just about has to be the same ladder as the Werner 13' - same hinges and same case included (same price too).

Dennis

The ones on the costco web page are "Articulating" ladders and do not extend. They can do some different things than the Little Giant type can - but can't do some other things, like a long extension ladder or adjustable height step ladder or a "stair ladder". Werner (and others) make those too - Lowes has a 12' Werner for $99 (and you get a $25 GC) and a 16' for $149 + GC.

As was pointed out, some of the Costco stores are selling the Werner 17' MT-17 for $99. So if you need something larger than the 13' and don't need the 22', that might be the way to go (assuming you have a membership and a store nearby). $99 is a LOT cheaper than the best price of a similar Little Giant 17' ladder.

Dennis

Just a suggestion on buying ladders:

Buy the highest OSHA load rating that you can afford. For the average homeowner, a good ladder is a once-a-lifetime buy, and the average homeowner tends to er, ah, shall we say "grow" over his/her lifetime. The extra stability and sturdiness of a Type 1 or 1A will be welcome every time it's used (except maybe if you need to lug it any distance ...), especially if you are using it to carry that new laser cannon, or anything heavier than a hammer, to the roof. The typical cheapo Type III is only useful for decorating the garage wall.

Thanks op!!!

I've been wanting a little giant but couldn't afford it. This is a very nice alternative with a great price. I'm off to check it out now. I'm small and I don't need something with higher quality.

Also, thanks to all other posters for the info for me to consider.

Thanks for the heads up!

I returned my Werner folder that I bought in Feb. @ 68 bucks for this one (13'). (if you didn't know, Lowes will take stuff back well over 30 days w/ the reciept)

I already used it to install a flood light on my garage, My dad has a little giant, this is no little giant, but for the money, its WELL worth it.

I had it extended all the way and worked for an hour on the 2nd to top step with no problems. works just like a little giant. I am 6'2" and weigh 250, so you can trust me when I say it's sturdy.

thanks again.

I used my Werner the other evening and it worked fine. The quility is not up to the Little Giant standard, but it seemed sturdy even with my considerable weight on it Since I only have 13' model this is not that big a deal - like it would be on the 17' or 22' ladder.

I don't care as much for the steps, but for the money (after GC) it did OK. I plan on keeping it.

Dennis

Does anyone know about how large the folded up ladder package for the 22' is? I'm trying to determine if the folded up 22' Werner would fit in my trunk (left open) or should I try and get a friend with an SUV or pickup truck to help out.

thanks.

The Werner web page says the 22' ladder (and the others) are 16" wide and the smallest step ladder the 22' makes is 5', so the closed minimum would be around 5 1/2 to 6 feet. There is some packing that would make a wee bit larger than that.

You could call Lowes and get someone to measure it better as well.

13' oos at lowes

Just got one at the Lowes in Hilliard, OH. Had plenty of the 13' ones. And the rebate printed out as planned.

Thanks. op!

The one at Costco is the MT-17B for $99. Does anybody know what the difference is from the MT-17?

vista12 said: [Q]The one at Costco is the MT-17B for $99. Does anybody know what the difference is from the MT-17?

I don't know. Is it rated 250lbs or 300lbs? That could be the difference. Also, it could be nothing - just a gimmick to keep other stores from having to PM Costco's price.

Lowes and other places around here used to do that. Carry the exact same item but with a suffix or something on the model number. When you tried to get them to PM they would decline stating that the model number was different. Made the PM guarantee fairly meaningless.

The real Little Giant ladders are better made (rungs welded on, not rivited) and as they get taller the base gets wider to keep them sturdy. I have NOT seen the 17' or 22' Werner MT series - but their web page says they are all the same width. My 13' Werner is fine, but I don't know if I could care for a taller ladder that was not wider - it would be too much like my old ladders (that I was afraid to use).

Dennis

bought the 22" it is SO HEAVY
how is the Little Giant compared in term of its weight?

pete777 said: [Q]bought the 22" it is SO HEAVY

This page says 42 pounds. Part of the reason I got the 13' Werner and already had the 22' LG is because of the weight. The ladder is very nice, but it is heavy. But I had other step and extension ladders that weighed less but I would hardly ever use them - not sturdy at all.

Hi guys...I just went to costco last night to get the 17' westen ladder. As some of u mentioned it is MT-17B model and can hold upto 300 lbs. Looks sturdy to me (may be because I have never dealt with any ladders before). I just trusted the comments posted here and didnt even check any other models or companies.

Hope this is a good buy (paid $99+tax). My house ceiling is 18 feet high. Would this ladder be safe enough to hold me up there at that height? Costco package came with some hinges and a hinge box with the ladder. I dont see a work platform with this ladder. Can someone recommend a good company platform to buy. Please keep in mind that am a novice DIY guy. So any comments, precautions feedback is helpful.

Thanks in advance.

be careful with the werner ladders. mine had some really sharp unfinished edges which could slice your hands. i filed them down. also the rubber grips on the ends of the ladder left marks on my walls. easily remedied with some cloth. Other than that it works good.

I second the sharp edges. Just sliced my finger pretty bad today while loading this thing into my car.

I bought a Werner 6' step ladder in June of last year, I wonder if Lowes would still take it back, with a receipt...

I think their return policy is 90 days with a receipt. Wowever if the ladder looks unused and you are a not a habitual offender of their return policy they may give you refund or more like merchandise money card .

FYI - saw the Werner 13' at Costco today for $99 - I almost bought it.

Yeah, that's right.
If you have double storied foyers/ rooms, the that is the ht you get.

Please do yourself (and family) a favor and use a scaffold if it's anything more than going up and then coming back down. I've got 20' ceilings and had to paint. I rented a 3 tower scaffold from HD for $53 for a week. It came with more parts than you can imagine, including outriggers and a safety rail. I had to rent their truck to bring it home ($19 and then again to return it.). My net cost of a bit over $90 is slightly less than my emergency room deductible...

The recent activity in this thread reminded me that I never got my GC from Lowes. I just checked and they say they just mailed it. I wonder if they all do that? If you never check the status then they never send it? I have had this happen to me a lot - remember to check the status and guess what? They JUST mailed it - they say.....

Dennis

Got my $25 GC in the mail yesterday! Hoo-Hoo!

Dennis

My father-in-law has a 22' Little Giant. I've got a 17' Cosco "World's Greatest". Both flare out at the ends. The hinge on the LG feels sturdier, and the pins for the extensions on the Cosco look stronger. The LG is welded, the Cosco is a combonation of welds and rivets. Both have lifetime warranties.

After several years of use, the LG has started to become a little loose around the hinge, and the extensions have started to get a little sticky. The Cosco is about the same as it's always been, but it's not as old or as frequently used.

The Cosco is rated at 300lb. I don't know what the rating on the LG is.

The most noticeable difference is that he paid $400 for the LG at the state fair, and I paid $105 shipped, brand new, for the Cosco on eBay.

The 13' Cosco is at WalMart and Target for $90-100, depending on the market. The 17' is something like $130. There's also a 21' available that I've only seen online. The 17' ebays for <$100, and the 21' for <$200.

I am going to check my Costco in Edison, NJ

I purchased the 17' one from Costco back in July. I absolutely love it. It is really sturdy and I usually extend it all the way. It easily fits in my mini-van when I need to work on other houses. A great buy.

taken from someone's website:

The Model 13 stores at 3 1/2 feet high, and opens to a 3, 4, or 5 foot stepladder. In the extension position, it extends from 7 - 11 feet, in one foot increments. It will extend the equivalent of 1 story high. Perfect for a small 1 story house. The Model 13 makes up approximately 5% of Little Giant Ladder sales.

Thank you very much for the info momoman.
