I got an OEM drive from Newegg with no jumpers. Had to dig the old one out of the trash and pull them off of it. |

Woops, looks like I was a little to slow. I think I am right.
So is 16X the peak write speed??? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

My 2500A burns Fujifilm 4X DVD-R media (TY) at 8X without a firmware hack. |

Yes, it's widely accepted that 16x will be the limit for burning. At 16x the dvd is spinning at ~10,000 rpm, any faster and the dvd starts to oscillate uncontrollably, thereby creating writing errors. While solutions are currently being developed, most people in the industry doubt that they'll ever go beyond 16x while keeping the cost at an acceptable level.
Man, that turned out longer than expected |

Hmm, paid $25 straight (no rebates) for my NEC 2500A which I flashed to 2510A, think it'll hold me over until blu ray.
I saw some dual layer discs at best buy, but they were expensive. Like $30 for 1 dual layer disc and 4 dvd+rs. Basically dual layer is too expensive to be worth it right now, may as well just buy a second dvd. |

mihaid said:Too bad it writes dvds in Z-CLV. You can see from the review that quality is not so good. It does cds in CAV though.
Still waiting for plextor 716
Could someone summarize what that means? I probably won't be buying this either way. The discs are too expensive and by the time those are cheap enough, this drive would be 30 bucks if not less. Seems a little pointless to buy a drive when I can't afford the discs. My single layer drive will last me a few more months! None the less, I would appreciate someone explaining what mihaid was talking about.
Thanks. |

Here is another review of a showdown between the 3500A and Pioneer 108.
This review leans towards the 108 so there's loads of different reviews that have different sides as to which one is best. I wish we could get a definative answer =/

What timing I have....heh heh.Call Newegg and ask them if you can refuse delivery of the 2510A burner and buy the 3500A instead, they have done that before. |

This looks like it could be a sweet drive. Maybe when people start using it and reporting various success with different media we can find out what it likes. Firmwares As always... upgrade at your own risk. |

You can check out CDFreaks , they have firmware, hardware, media forums, etc.
You can also find some user reviews of the latest generation of 16x dvd burners including the latest lite-on, pioneer and nec.
jimstuy said:Hi, i've wanted to buy a dvd burner for a while. I narrowed it down to Pioneer dvr-108 and the old NEC 2500A model. Now that the new one is out, I think im gonna go with this. But I'm still new to this(no idea what/where to get info on firmwares, what Z-CLV is, etc), you guys know any sites/forums that have newbie faqs for dvd burners and firmwares in general? Thanks! |
