OK.. will wait and see...
For those that don't have a clue what I'm talking about, here's a good article on bitsetting and why it's a nice plus (and necessary in a writer in my view):

That's a good price but I think that's 16x max plus I don't even trust burning any higher than 8x anyway. |

Got some more info for you. The 3500a supports bitsetting for DL. For SL, what would happen in the past is HP would rebadge the drives and would release firmware that supports SL bitsetting. It has been reported that HP might not rebadge the 3500a. Another supplier that usually rebadges the NEC's is MadDog. Unlike the past, MadDog has now requested firmware (for the 3500) with their own ID string, and requested SL bitsetting support. As soon as this firmware is released, we will be able to flash our drives with it.
In addition to that, it feels like somebody always comes through with a hacked firmware for NECs. There is a new 2.77 firmware floating around (created for the TDK oem 3500), so we don't know what are the features included on that one yet.
I am confident that some kind of solution will be delivered. The firmware game is what i like about NEC's. =)

Yes. Either will work. Firewire is better for hard drives, but for optical drives it doesn't make a bit of difference, so buy whichever is cheaper (almost certain to be USB2.0 in this case). |

Cool - thanks for the info csrx. Keep us updated if you do find out that the 3500a has been patched/hacked for SL bitsetting. I'll probably hold off buying this writer 'til then since I still have my old Sony4x to play with and DL discs are still too expensive for my budget to only use the DL bitsetting.
Cheers!

i'd still get firewire. i bought a usb2 5.25" enclosure from bytecc, and it gave me lots of trouble. exchanged it for the combo, and using the firewire, there were no problems at all.
and the 3500 will get hacked firmware eventually. |

Awesome.
Is Optorite the only drive that does HD-Burn? I guess I shouldn't care with DVD+R prices dropping so fast.
Will probably pick this up next paycheck |

Well I jumped in on this deal....made sure to add the free media as well.... ordered on the 19th about 11pm and got my drive today...bare drive with 5pk dvd-rs. Its well worth for me over the amount of money I ended up paying for my sony 4x when it first came out. By the way my delivery date was schedule for august 24th....so for those waiting till monday to get it deliver ....you might get it Saturday. Good luck. |

How can one tell which size of the enclosure to buy? From your reply it seems 5.25" for this drive. What about the internal hard drives? Can someone please help? |

Can anyone who bought this drive report whether it fixes some of the poor reading/error correction problems associated with the NEC 25x0 series ? Have you had better luck reading scratched DVDs ? Thanks. |
