Is there any difference between the Roadie and SKYFi besides the size and modulator?
Don't let your greed get to you. The Commander is NOT the one to get - it is old tech and the only advantages are small display size and wired in modulator.
The SkyFi2 is the newest (except for the MyFi) tuner and can be moved from car to home to beach to motorcycle with extra kits or the boombox. Better display (easier to read and more characters), 30 minute pause and rewind, last channel recall, music alert (beeps when one of a list of favorite artists or songs comes on), and more. Just becuase the MSRP of the commander is more, I would not get it.
Also, folks quit fretting over the "newer" boombox - it is a LOT more money and includes a (useless when you have sat radio) CD player.

For those considering, there is a new Skifi boom box which is much, much better than the one in this offer. Might be worth it to get the car/home kit, and spend a little extra on a more functional boom box. It is item number SA 10034 at most on-line retailers.
As someone who was going to buy the new Myfi, this deal puts my dilema to rest.
This is a heck of a deal, and I thank the OP for it. I hope it goes through.
Happy holidays.
The newer boombox is here
I've played with it and I don't know about how sturdy it is with moveable parts.
I don't see carrying around something to play am/fm/cd's with the XM
oops, Just saw Dwynne's post about the boombox. |

Did they e-mail you any tracking info? They charged the CC but no further e-mails from them after the order confirmation.

I'm in for one. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about the skyfi2? How well is the FM transmitter in it? Will it work with the antenna on the dash rather than the roof (I know they say not to, but wondering if anyone has any real world experience with it).
TIA

Mine gets a good signal with the antenna on the dash. |

I use the skyfi with it on the dash, but I will lose the signal under overpasses and near some tall buildings. The roof is the best. |

I would never stick an antenna on my cars, I have always had good luck putting the antenna on the parcel shelf (of a sedan). In my daughter's car I just stuck some of the "rough" Velcro on the bottom of the antenna and just laid it on the parcel shelf in her car - the carpet on it makes a good imitation of Velcro "smooth". In other cars I have double sticky taped the antenna to a child seat latch, or some similar point in a convertible. On trips in friend's cars or trucks it has worked well laid on the dash or near a side window.
IF these come with the newest car kit the FM modulator feeds its signal back to the XM antenna, so if you have a mounting place for the antenna (like the parcel shelf) and that happens to be close to your car stereo's antenna then you are in luck. With the older car kits the FM modulator just radiates from the tuner itself. Note that this is based on Delphi/XM press stuff, since I have not SEEN one of the new kits yet. In tests with my SkyFi2 the FM modulator works quite well.
Better than the FM modulator is the included "fake tape" if you have a cassette deck in your car.
Better still is an aux input, these are available for LOTS of cars know and should be looked into for best sound quality.
You could also buy the wired in FM modulator, it will work when the internal one will not since it disconnects the external antenna and can be set for 87.9mhz (which is outside of the broadcast band for FM so you will have no interference).
Other than the "MyFi" the SkyFi2 is the best tuner on the market right now for XM.

I think if you mag mounted it to the top of your car as a test and drove through the same area it would probably drop out as well. The problem is the antenna can't see the sats under a bridge or near tall buildings, if you are lucky enough to have a ground repeater in the area you may not lose the signal. At my office, I can get about 1/2 signal strength on the sats from my west facing window, but get nearly full scale on the ground repeater that must be pretty close by - so I get to XM all day long

well I would have a problem since Delphi's own literature says,
"We do not recommend using the old SkyFi Vehicle Adaptor Kit (SA10002) with the SkyFi2 Receiver since the SA10102 has been designed to maximize the performance of SkyFi2",
and then if XM was to send the old kit in this package deal.
now I understand the old cradles do function but that would be pretty f'd up
by the way thanks OP this is a smokin' hot deal

Mong,
XM has a plan where you pay for 5 yrs. ahead and you get the MOST discount. I don't what they are now (I do know they were better than what they are now). So after your 3 months are up on your SkiFi2 you call up XM and ask for a 1,2(I think),3,4(I think),or 5 yr. plan and you pay it all at once and don't worry about it. Like I said in my other post I have had them since their launch and know I will be listening for many more years. Oh yea they just hit 3 Million Customers!!! Where sirius is still only 600K I think. Also sirius Launched like 6 mos. after them and they're still way behind. Ummmm who's going to win the Sat. Radio war???

I have several of the old cradles and my SkyFi2 works just fine in all of them. It would probably only be an issue if
a) you have to use the FM modulator b) your car stereo is not able to pick up a good signal without this extra "help"
In my tests with the old cradle the modulator worked just fine, a little better than a Belkin Tunecast of Tunecast II in my cars. One of them has an in the rear glass antenna and it still worked OK. With the antenna on the rear parcel shelf of that car, a new kit and antenna might help out a little IF I had to use FM. Since I don't use FM except in some of the cars/motorcycles I am not planning on replacing any of my kits since it works OK with the old ones.

Search is your friend
J&R has the car kits (original ones) for $39.88 with free shipping, but are currently OOS but they are taking back-orders. Linky-poo There is an instant rebate on the car and home kits (again the original ones) so they should be $49.99 at places like CC, BB, Crutchfield, etc.
eCost WAS selling the boomboxes (w/o a tuner) for $59.99 + $4.95 handling, but looks like that sale is over. Linky-poo-too So I would expect it would cost you $80-100 for a boombox now.
If you think about it, the promo prices on these are so cheap that even if you just needed the boombox or the kit you might THINK about just getting another set at the promo price. You would have to pay the sub on it for 6 months, but then you would have a spare tuner, sell it on fleabay or just keep it.
