Interesting product, not a bad price either. I was thinking of adding a 20 gig ipod to my car, but this seems better and costs about the same. Only if it had am/fm/receiver, then I could replace my headunit. Thanks for the heads up.
Product Overview: The Alpine HDA-5460 is an add-on, DIN-sized hard disk drive music player with a removable 16GB HDD. It can play MP3, WMA, and WAV files. The player can be controlled by an Alpine Ai-NET-compatible receiver, or as a stand alone unit.
an ADD-ON? and the HDD is a propietary device... I'll pass until standalone units that can accept generic IDE drives comes out....
These have been upgraded by many to take larger standard drives, though it does void the warranty. And if they ever get their next model out... http://www.omnifimedia.com/home/
this is an INPUT device you still beed a HU to run this HD.
most good head units have at least 2 or 3 auxilary inputs. this would go into one of those.

this is a cool new product, alpine is a great brand. this is a steal actually since the most alpine are over 200 anyways, never heard of a hd in a car dash.

thats what I am doing right now. My head unit has 3 auxillary inputs and of couse they are a pair of rcas. so i bought a rca to single head phone jack converter (can be bought at wal mart, target, radio shack, etc) and it works great.
I have an Alpine head unit that would work with this HD device. However, even at the deeply discounted price I don't think it's worth it. Alpine has the KCA 420i iPod Adapter that lets you control your iPod from many newer Alpine head units. The adapter/iPod combo may cost a little more, but you'll have a much more convenient method of listening to your music wherever you go.
Does anyone know what type of HD it is. I have some notebook hd's around and I'd like to upgrade the capacity in the future. Think it would be possible?

If you could add the 100GB laptop drive that there was deal on, then this would be a sweet receiver. However, no USB 2.0? I think I'll wait for one with USB 2.0.

the ipod adapter got bad reviews because it was confusing to control on the deck. id rather get one of those adapters that allow you to control your music straight from the ipod.

If you call crutchfield, and your order is $200 or more, you can pay in 4 monthly installents.
valkyriesound said: Am I correct.... this unit is NOT Sat. radio compatitble?
Thanks....
It is not a tuner, it is a hard drive based media player that connects to Ai-net compatable receivers, such as Alpine, some Honda, and some BMW's. If you head unit is capable of controlling Ai-NET CD-changer, then you can use this. It mounts in place of the cubby under the single DIN radio. You can connect it to any head unit that has "Line in" or "Aux" inputs, but the head unit will not control the media player, you probably have to controll it from the media player.

I paid $260. I picked Scratched and dented (used/open box) that takes $50 off then I used the $20 off. You cannot use the 10% off also though, I already tried it. And you do NOT need to call in to get the $20 off. You just put it in the referral box when checking out.
Cant wait to get this, Ill hook up to the pioneer p7300 that I bought for $100 and I will have 3000 songs at my disposal which cannot get scratched up in my car.

Really, while USB 2.0 would certianly be nice, I don't think it makes or breaks a larger hard drive based car head unit like this one. Keep in mind that you really only fill the thing with music once, after which you will only probably be adding one or two albums at a time every now and then, which is a transfer that you can do in no time even at USB 1.1 speeds.
The only reason I bring this up is because I wouldn't want anyone to be discouraged from purchacing a hard drive based head unit for such a minor reason. Going from a cd player to a large hard drive based unit is like when you first went from cassette tapes to cds - it's amazing, and once you do it you can't imagine how you ever lived without it. I personally have an Empeg in my car with 120GB worth of hard drive (greatest head unit ever made, BTW) and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
Man remember having a big casette tape case or stacks of tapes in your car? That takes me back. Probably had a dozen in my car at any given time tops..now I have a 40 gig iPod with sirius satellite..times have changed
