Interesting product, not a bad price either. I was thinking of adding a 20 gig ipod to my car, but this seems better and costs about the same. Only if it had am/fm/receiver, then I could replace my headunit. Thanks for the heads up.
Product Overview: The Alpine HDA-5460 is an add-on, DIN-sized hard disk drive music player with a removable 16GB HDD. It can play MP3, WMA, and WAV files. The player can be controlled by an Alpine Ai-NET-compatible receiver, or as a stand alone unit.
an ADD-ON? and the HDD is a propietary device... I'll pass until standalone units that can accept generic IDE drives comes out....
These have been upgraded by many to take larger standard drives, though it does void the warranty. And if they ever get their next model out... http://www.omnifimedia.com/home/
this is a cool new product, alpine is a great brand. this is a steal actually since the most alpine are over 200 anyways, never heard of a hd in a car dash.

thats what I am doing right now. My head unit has 3 auxillary inputs and of couse they are a pair of rcas. so i bought a rca to single head phone jack converter (can be bought at wal mart, target, radio shack, etc) and it works great.
I have an Alpine head unit that would work with this HD device. However, even at the deeply discounted price I don't think it's worth it. Alpine has the KCA 420i iPod Adapter that lets you control your iPod from many newer Alpine head units. The adapter/iPod combo may cost a little more, but you'll have a much more convenient method of listening to your music wherever you go.
Does anyone know what type of HD it is. I have some notebook hd's around and I'd like to upgrade the capacity in the future. Think it would be possible?

If you could add the 100GB laptop drive that there was deal on, then this would be a sweet receiver. However, no USB 2.0? I think I'll wait for one with USB 2.0.
the ipod adapter got bad reviews because it was confusing to control on the deck. id rather get one of those adapters that allow you to control your music straight from the ipod.
