The iCN 510 really is a good product. Why do I like this so much ? Well if you compare it to the nearest competitor which is TomTom GO, then it's a much slimmer product, fits in your shirt pocket and is pleasant to use. TomTom GO likewise is a great product but it's a little over-sized with it's built-in sensors, and you are sort of left wondering where to put it when you leave your car for a walk around town. Not with the iCN 510! Compare the iCN 510 with the new Garmin Quest, and although the Quest is smaller in size, even better for the shirt pocket, there's a huge compromise on the size of the screen. That's 3.5" for the iCN 510 compared with 2.2" for the Garmin Quest. You can sort of see where I'm coming from here. The iCN 510 gives you everything you want without sacrificing the size of the screen

thanks for positive note on 510. I was bit concerned after reading this review.

Conclusion :
Overall we found the Navman iCN510 to be a good entry level product within the range, its size is a major advantage as it is truly portable and more so than a TomTom go unit, it works well although the routing may take a bit of work to get just right fro our tastes. Downsides are the poor area avoidance system and fiddly controls for use while on the road and the pathetic speaker volume. Priced at £475 its not the cheapest device out there amidst the all in one GPS system battle but it compares well to the software + PDA options.

And the question you want us to answer? this or a TomTom go unit? well if you want a small ultra portable unit and solid navigation then the Navman iCN510 meets the brief but for a fully featured unit we'd still pick the TomTom Go.

I will be looking very closely at it when it arrives and may look like a complete
idiot with 2 gps units stuck to my dashboard. I like the size of the screen compared
to my Quest, but I like that the quest can easily sit in my shirt pocket with out problem.
I don't do much land nav, so battery life isn't all that important to me. I am not sure
which will have the longer battery life. It's still a great deal, almost half what
I paid for the quest. Perhaps this is a sign that other GPS systems will have to drop
in price as well. Hope so, got my eye on a few others!

Adding my two cents to this deal: This unit is made by Mitac in Korea. They make the best selling PPC`S in that area. Their first generation PPC/GPS is the Mio 168. I have the 168 and the Garmin Ique. I haven`t even turned on the Ique since the Mio arrived a few months back. It has the best screen I`ve seen on a PPC. The 168 comes with an SDIO slot which enables you to add bluetooth, SD 802.11 wireless cards and other add ons. I added the Sandisk wireless card with 256 meg and Stanaphone softphone software and turned mine into a VOIP phone. I ordered the Navman and will be selling my Ique. To those of you that ordered this, I don`t think you will regret it. If you want a little more punch, you may want to look at the Mio 168 which you can find online for around $350. I did read that the Navman came with Windows Mobile software but I don`t know how reliable that statement was. Once you have this unit, you will wonder how you lived without it.

Anyone know how this compares to the Magellan Roadmate 500?

Pretty much all GPS`S do the same thing. This one is cheaper.

Can someone summarize how this works and if I'll need anything to go with it?

1.) Turn it on.
2.) Putting it in a car is advised but you can use it while walking.

Not really. The maps do not come pre-loaded nor does this GPS have ANY map memory. So it is more like:

1) Buy GPS
2) Buy large SD card and insert into GPS
3) Load USB drivers and connect GPS to PC (windoze only, I assume)
4) Unlock maps online
5) Select and load maps that will fit the SD card you purchased (this is why large SD is important)
6) Wait for maps to load
7) Then place it in a car and go for a drive

All GPS units are NOT created equal. There is the ease of use, features, POI database, map quality, speed, waterproof rating, and other factors that should be considered. All that said, to get a color screen routing GPS for $300 (plus the cost of a huge SD card) is not a bad deal. The 2610 has a remote, but no battery and costs $325 or so more (after rebate). The Quest has a limited memory size, smaller screen and costs $200+ more. The TomTom Go is similar, but is said to have a terrible POI database - and it costs $200 or so more. The RoadMate series all cost a lot more.

So looking at the reviews, several quirks and flaws in the GPS - POI database, maps, etc. But I have seen those in ALL the GPS units I have. Is this the best GPS? Nope. Best one for hiking or geocaching? Nope. Best for motorcycle use? Probably can't be used on a bike. Is this the best one you can buy TODAY for a car for $300 + the cost of an SD card? Probably.

Edit: One thing that bothers me is that in the outpost ad copy and NavmanUSA it says Access to one map region . Looking at the NavmanUSA site it does not specify, but I assume you get the whole USA to unlock and not just one region. If you have to pay to unlock other regions (the way Garmin used to do) then this is not as good a deal. What it COULD mean, is that like the TomTom Go you can only have one region active at a time (even though you have a bunch loaded into the SD card. On the Go you have to change the active region if you cross the reqion boundary to have it route correctly (this to me is a huge flaw). If the NavMan shares this flaw, it is not a show stopper but certainly makes it a pain to use - for sure if you live or travel regularly near the border of one of their regions.

Let me re-state in case you didn't read through the above message:

You can't load ANY maps into the GPS without an SD card, which is not included!

The good news is outpost has a nice selection. Linky-poo

Does it show estimated arrival time, speed, etc like a Garmin does?

Has anyone's order from early yesterday shipped?

Wrong, it has 32 meg. You can probably load your local area into the unit but a SD card is needed for state/region.

Yes

Has anyone's order from early yesterday shipped?

Today is a holiday. Nothing will ship until Monday or Tuesday.

Any good deals on 1GB SD card ? Also does this thing support high speed SD card or use just regular SD card ?

awesome! thanks OP and happy new year!

Looks like Dell has some decent prices on 512 mb SD cards - $39 for Sandisk. Any comments?

alert mods

The max SD card this unit takes is 512 mb. J and R has the Dane-Elec 512 for $25 after a $15 rebate (plus $4.95 shipping). They also have the 256mb for $10 after $15 rebate.
