LighterWallet said:rpalicherla said:I will put in my pitch for NextAlarm.com ... have used them for about 3 years now... started off month to month and now am doing the yearly thing... If you own the alarm system in your home, then they are a good option... they call back fast and have the cops over at your house pretty fast as well if no one answers... i have had 1 false alarm ( and a few times i have triggered the alarm myself to see how fast the response is and to test my system )... they have been reliable so far...
Thanks for the review!

$240,000 for a house!! I would love to live where you live. My POS condo cost me 410,000 here in So Cal.
quickNdirty said:RBA said:LighterWallet said:RBA said:If your house is worth robbing, wouldn't the theif be smart enough to cut the cable going into your house/cable modem? Or does that trigger an alarm too?
It does if you have a good system, yes. Otherwise, as you correctly point out, it isn't much good.
So if it does?
1. Does it also know when there is a cable outage in the area? Would police respond everytime the cable went out?
2. If it uses the VOIP, what happens if the power goes out? Or if the VOIP goes down for any reason. Another false response by the police?
Your alarm company calls you before they call the cops. I've had them call my cell if they couldn't reach anyone at the house. No false response unless you tell them you're not home and to call the police.

I posted some of my own research over at ATOT... Link
I went with the cheaper option--saveonmyalarm.com for 1yr at $2.95/mo + $30 setup fee. Not sure how good it will be. The one nice thing is if you can't reprogram your alarm because you've been locked out they include a diverter which will plug into the phone line at the alarm and redirect the calls to their monitoring center (no extra charge but you have to return it if you choose to switch companies).
They also have a few other options, and if you call they might throw in a free month at the end of the contract... they did for me. They are (I believe) part of a larger monitoring company, but i haven't done all my homework yet. Still it was cheap so I signed up. I found out (via email) they are in someway related to this site. Other than being a new customer (Just signed up last week) I have no affiliation with them.
On any monitoring service, be sure to read the fine print. The contract on this one states you have to cancel by giving 60days notice or you pay a monthly rate of $13.95 until you do. Even at $13.95/mo cheaper than what I had. |

I have a GUARDIAN/FIRST-ALERT alarm system in my home . It was here when I moved in, the previous owner canceled the monitoring service. Since I am not interested in phone monitoring, can I activate and use this system independently? All the equipment is still in the home, including keypad, sensors, etc. |

I assume if it dial out, the old alarm company will just ignore it. |

Uplug the RJ31X and you shouldn't have to worry about it dialing out. |

I currently have Guardian. Been paying them for 7 years over $25 per month. I called them today to cancel because so many others are lower in cost. I am waiting on a call back as they said they wanted to keep me as a customer and would let me know what they could do to reduce the cost. I will update with what they offer after they call back.
I have a stupid question. If the alarm can be set to call a number for a monitoring company, can't it be configured to call your own cell phone. Then you can call the police if need be? |

I just switched to Nextalarm.com to monitor my house. So far everything is good except one thing, the customer service guy was inpatient to reprogram my system when I first called in. Then I decided to give them another chance. Then I called in later and it was set up without any problem. We did test the system right away and it worked fine.
Now I am glad that I got out of ADT at last. Tell you what, I really hate ADT and I regret that I signed the stupid 3 year contract and they don't even do what they suppose to do. They are way overcharged for their service, and that's not even enough, they raised my rate as they want during my contact! So basically the contract only applies to that you have to pay them for 3 years, not guarranty the rate and service! After I switched, I called ADT to cancel my service. ADT still will charge me 1 more month, without refunding this month's money for unused service left! ADT really sucks! All they care is how to eat your money with ease. STAY AWAY FROM ADT!!!
I would never go back to ADT again. That's my lesson. |

Where did you see that? When I clicked on the "Sign up" button the sign up form had a drop down box with Florida as one of the states. |

Not a stupid question at all. Yes, the alarm can be set up to call any number, however you would have to program it to do that which requires you to have the master programming code (can't remember what the correct term is) and the manual. But the answer to your question is yes. |

What about getting some sort of security or "bullet-proof" glass? I understand that it won't save me from fire, but do you think it is viable protection against break-ins?
Thanks! |
