I picked up the Sumo-Bot Robotics kit for $30 at CompUSA. My son loves it, and it has real learning potential vs the Robosapien he got for Christmas. This is a small wheeled vehicle with control electronics based on the Basic Stamp 2. Manuals on disk guide assembly and teach electronics, robotics, and programming.
I should mention, a 9-pin M-F serial cable (not a null modem cable) is required to connect the robot to your computer.

That is a great deal. I've built these before and easily spent 500$. I think a basic stamp+controller board alone is about 75$.

It's not plastic, mostly steel, with nylon worm gears and plastic wheels. There are two equal sized wheels on each side, and a motor for each side. One wheel is driven by a DC electric motor, and the 0-ring "tread" drives the second wheel.
If your seven-year old brother can understand assembly-language programming of microcontrollers, he can handle this. Most seven year olds can't. My son is a bright 11 year old, and it will be a stretch for him. It's rated fairly for 14+ years of age.

Oh thank you for telling me that it is for 14+! I almost ordered one for my four year old, he loves his Robosapien, and this sounded even more fun from the OPs description, so I was all set to go for it, thank you again!!
Finally picked mine up instore today. It caused the CSRs to go nuts. They all wanted one. Thankfully there were plenty left on the shelf. Note I said were. About 5 of the CSRs took one for themselves. Darn good deal. Goes for $99 on Amazon. The Stamp 2 alone cost about twice as much.

Yeah picked mine up yesterday! Took three salesmen to find it. Too funny. None of them even knew they sold such a thing. There was one left, and I doubt it made it through the end of the day. Really good deal. Thanks OP.
You're welcome. I saw two of these on the shelf at the CompUSA in Minnetonka, MN (Ridgedale area) today. For my son's Sumo-bot, we didn't have a 9-pin serial cable around anymore, so I ended up spending another $14 or so at Radio Shack for a 9-pin M-F RS-232 Cable.
